I can't find where to eject my SD card before taking it out of the slot in my HP Envy Notebook computer. Can I just remove it? I don't think so because my MacBook Pro requires the SD card to be ejected in the software (Finder program) before removing the card from the slot. Please let me know. I did a search in the Microsoft Community, and some one said to hot unplug it, and no official Microsoft person replied.

Thanks in advance.

Right click on the card in file Explorer. . . This will bring up a menu . . . One of the menu items is "eject" . . . Click on that and you will get a message saying "it is safe to remove" . . .

There should be an icon on your taskbar which looks like a little USB drive, which you click to "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media". You can also follow the directions here to set up "Quick removal" https://www.cnet.com/how-to/quickly-remove-usb-devices-without-using-safe-removal/

I can't find FILE EXPLORER in Windows 10. I'll keep looking...

I searched for file explorer and I had success. SDHC card now ejected in software and hard ware!

Thank you very, very much!

The icon of "File Folder".

With Windows 10 (actually since XP I seem to remember) all you really have to do is close the operation, wait a few seconds for the activity light to stop blinking and remove the card. At least that is what I do and the computer hasn't blown up in my face yet.

To get to what used to be called file explorer, hold down the Windows key and tape the "E" key.

Right click on the card and click eject.

Since you should be formatting the file when you put it back in the camera, just pulling it out of the computer shouldn't matter much.

On my antique laptop (almost 9 years old), I push in slightly on the SD card & it releases from the slot. Then I can pull it out. Have never tried ejecting it from File Explorer.

I think you might consider ejecting your SD card in the software BEFORE you eject out of the hardware. But as long as it is not writing or reading from the SD, it might not matter. On my MacBook Pro, I have rendered an USB memory stick unusable because I didn't eject in the software first, and it corrupted the USB memory stick permanently. At least that is why I think it stopped working.

It really depends on how the write cache was enabled in Windows, but its never a bad idea to eject first.

Have you tried using disk utility to repair the usb memory stick? If the MacBook Pro recognizes that there is a usb drive in the computer, disk utility should fix it.

Being as all I ever do with cards in my laptop is move files to a folder on the desktop, when they're all moved, it's safe to remove the card. I've been shooting digital for almost as long as I've had this computer & haven't corrupted a card yet. I have 2 32gig SDHC cards (in CF adapters) that I rotate through my Alpha 850. They don't get formatted each time.

On the bottom right of your Task Bar, you should see a little up-arrow - /\. Clicking on that will show you a window with icons. The icon on the right side of the center row is for USB devices. Click on that, and you will see what's connected. Click on the one you want to eject, and another window will pop up when it is safe to eject it.

With Windows 10 just physically remove the card. You no longer need to select a menu item and tell it to eject the removable media. I have been pulling card for years from my laptop and never had an issue.
