It appears to be device specific. My iPhone 8s has the choice of formats under the camera settings in both iOS 11.0.3 & 11.1.
My iPad does NOT have this option in camera settings with 11.0.3 or 11.1

Thanks for your input. This brings a bit more focus to what is going on.

I updated to version 11.1 just this morning, prior to realizing I couldn’t copy my images from the device. I can assure you there is no option to do as you say in either my iPhone or iPad. I know that most of the remedies I read about gave the same recommendation as you’re giving, so I can only assume that Apple removed those options in version 11.1.

I just updated to v 11.1 and still have the choice of HEIF or JPEG. This is under camera - formats.

Just a guess, but I’m thinking the option does not show in the iPad settings because it’s camera is not as advanced as the iPhone 8s and therefore not capable of saving to the new format?

Yes, it seems to be device specific, with older devices (cameras) unable to support the new format. Therefore, those options are not available on the older devices.

That should clear it up...

LOL! I came in to UHH to post the same link. And, you're right. It does. Seemingly it takes an iPhone 7 or later. This is fine for me. I use my Apple devices rarely to take pics, but I do like to keep what I capture, so I copy them into a folder and import that folder into LR. I can also load the iPhone images to DropBox (from the phone), which gives me access to them.

I suspect all of our PP software will accommodate this new format (HEIF) over the ensuing months. Seems quite viable.

Thanks to everyone for your participation in the thread. Hope we all come away a bit more enlightened. I know I have.

The version 11.X update to iPhone/iPad uses the new HEIC image format. I typically simply connect my device and copy the images to my PC so they can be cataloged in LR. However, with this update, the images are simply not available in Windows Explorer.

I've made some cursory searches for a remedy, but have not yet found one. Can anyone shed any light on a method to get my images from the device to my PC?

Thanks in advance.

Just took a shot with my iPhone 7+ that has IOS 11.1 installed. Connected the iPhone to my PC, opened File Explorer. Found the folder "iPhone". Opened the folder. (There were several subfolders). Found the file that that I had just shot and opened it. No problems. The file was listed as a JPEG.

Sounds appropriate. The new HEIF format does not apply to devices older than version 7. I perceive it as arm-twisting to get me to buy a new phone. :-)

Not sure if this is available in Windoze or not, but I use PhotoSync to transfer all of my images from my iPhone to my Macs or from iPhone to iPhone or iPhone to iPad, etc. This app will let you transfer quickly and seamlessly among all my Mac devices. There is no physical connection needed, but simply wifi and it is quick.

Thanks Tomcat. It's always been as simple as connecting the iPhone/iPad to the PC with the charging cable and copying the images from the device to where I want them. The newer format and updates do not allow this anymore. However, I can use the Windows built-in app (Photos) to do the same thing. I never have that many images, so it isn't a major inconvenience. I appreciate your recommendation, nonetheless.
