The Spotted Lanternfly was introduced into the US here in Berks County, PA from some unknown source in SE Asia. It was first discovered three years ago and it is spreading like crazy into a four county area. They will attack the grape vines, and stone fruit trees as well as other PA crops. They are poor flyers but have spread very quickly. If left unchecked they could be devastating to our agricultural economy. Large groups have spread out over the county since their discovery to kill them and scrape their egg masses. Way to go Hal! Everyone dead county.

The Spotted Lanternfly was introduced into the US ... (show quote)

Interesting. I was in PA a few weeks ago, and I saw them, mostly on the ground. I noticed the red on their wings when they flew.

It's proven impossible to curb invasive species, so it will be interesting to see how this develops.

Never going to happen. Just one person entering from Asia could have a bug, a seed, or an insect's egg on his clothing.

You know how we got Japanese beetles, right? They came along with those beautiful cherry trees that bloom in Washington, DC, every year - a "gift" from Japan.

Hal81, if you are out side the quarantine area the government wants to know. PA is tracking this pest and is asking the public to notify them of sightings. Take a look at http://www.agriculture.pa.gov/Protect/PlantIndustry/spotted_lanternfly/Pages/Spotted-Lanternfly-Alert.aspx
