It shows that Nikon is responding to market changes, which is s good thing. The market for high end compact cameras that do things that smart phones do not do well is still fine. The photographic capabilties of smart phones are bounded by a number of constraints, but they deliver the results desired by the majority of 'the unwashed masses', plus a few other useful things!

You have to wonder if Nikon , Canon and others will start making cell phones to replace their entry level cameras.

Not a likely viable option. Sony failed. Microsoft failed. Samsung failed with cameras. Not the most promising route for Nikon or Canon.

The entry level compact camera shown as an example has a optical zoom of 35X...name one smart phone that has that kind of a zoom?
