If, like me, you enjoy using different photo editors, and, if you have not used Gimp in a while, you owe it to yourself to give this version a try. It's a development release, not the stable release. I subscribe to Adobe CC, but enjoy working in the Linux OS (Ubuntu). I discovered this version of Gimp when I upgraded from Ubuntu 17.04 to 17.10 (another step I would recommend if you are running Ubuntu - I much prefer this version of Ubuntu over the previous versions). As a consequence of this upgrade, I clicked to install Gimp and found this version available.
Version 2.9.7 seems plenty stable to me, and it runs sprightly in Ubuntu. It comes with Darktable pre-installed as a plugin. This plugin is automatically invoked when I click my Sony raw files from within Gimp. Darktable opens those raw files without a problem. You can use Darktable as you would Lightroom to organize or edit your photo, or just close Darktable which then sends the photo to Gimp where you can edit away.
Gone is the 8bit limitation.
I like and use Photoshop CC, but, over the years have always also enjoyed working in Gimp. The development team has done a great job with this version and seem to be on a solid path towards a ground-breaking stable version.
Try it, I believe you will like it.

GIMP always has been a great program.
Thanks. I have used it, like you, just to try things out. I haven't upgraded in a while and the weather is crappy today. I guess I'll be doing some Gimping.

I have always tried to keep a selection of PP software on my machine, and Gimp has/was always there, but I seemed to have issues with it running kind of slow compared to Photoshop and others. Hopefully as new versions come out that speed problem will be addressed.

Are you running Gimp from Windows or Linux? I have a previous version of 2.9 installed on Windows, and it does, indeed run very slowly. I'll have to update that version and give it a try. Generally, when I'm in Windows, I use Photoshop, anyhow.

I am currently running everything from an iMac. Current Gimp version is 2.8.22, but will install and look at the next version once stable and released. I make use of Lightroom and Photoshop daily, but like to keep alternatives on my desktop so I know what is available and keep my brain occupied :)

But it's free! How good can it be? "You get what you pay for."
That's on my list of things to learn.
.7 might just be for Linux. I only found .6 for Windows.

OK - thanks for looking Bill.

I run Ubuntu on my two laptops (after getting hit by ransomware).
I'll update the operating system and Darkroom and Gimp today.
Thanks!

I cancelled Adobe CC ... I was not using it enough to justifiy keeping it ... ! I found GIMP and am using it much more than I used Adobe. Of course, I must add that I am only learning the things that I want to use ... when I had Adobe I tried to learn the entire program ... I found that that was not a good thing for me to do.
The first day I used GIMP I made a copy of a *.jpg, coverted it to B&W image, layered the B&W over the color image, then removed selected B&W from the image ... I'll attach a copy but please be kind, I'm still getting the hand of GIMP and photography in general.

What is available on this PP that makes it interesting? I only have Corel Paint Shop Pro, Photo X2, ver. 12.50. It has its limits.📷
