Losing Desktop from Finder

Hello UHH;
Forgive my occasional dumb questions, but I remain "computer stupid" having just gotten one when I went back to school two years ago.
I have a 2014 Apple Pro 13" Laptop, that HAS had some MAJOR crap happened to it. (At one point I had to send it back in to Apple to get cleaned and everything reinstalled.) At that time a regional Apple Service manager told me that he had NEVER seen happen what was happening to my computer, they even had a management meeting on it! Fast forward to now and "occasionally" weird things happen.
And (at least to me,) there is a new one popping up...
When I open Finder, the "Desktop heading is not on the list on the left. There are files that USE to be on my Desktop, but now they are not on the screen. (They are in "all my files.") Can anyone suggest how I can bring the heading "Desktop" back in the Finder listing, (and NOT have it disappear again,) and why are files on my screen sometimes, then when I work another time, they are NOT there? Thanks..

I have a MacPro 13 but can't help you at all. I am probably not much better at this than you are. But my one saving grace is I go to the local Mac store where the people have always been ready to help sort out whatever issues I have with my computer. Actually the computer has always been fine but it is me that gets sorted out on how to properly use it. Do you have a Mac store close by that you can go to?

I can only echo what Dennis wrote. The folks at my local Genius Bar are truly lifesavers for me. If you have a store close to you, give them a try.

Hi! I'm not an Apple guy, but I do know Windows, in Windows if you are in, let's just use "DESKTOP" as an example, it does not show up on the menu screen! Or whatever item you are in, doesn't show in the nenu! What does this have to do with anything? Not sure just where it fits in Apple's scheme of things! Sorry I'm not much help!

While I don't have this problem on my IMac, I Googled "unhide favorites in Finder sidebar" which came up with several possible solutions, any of which may depend upon which OS you're using.

The first thing you may want to do is open Finder and in the upper left corner click on Finder and in the pulldown menu click on Preferences; that will get you a window that shows the items in your sidebar; the ones you want to see should be checked.
Another quick solution may be to just turn off your computer (Restart or Shut Down; don't log out);

If these are not the answer for your problem look into some of the other possible remedies in your google search.

The list of locations on the left in Finder is user-controlled for most of them. Get Finder to show you - on the right- the top level (user name) and you will see a folder named Desktop. Drag it onto the side bar and it should show up there from then on. Removing one is done with a right click. That sidebar is not exactly the same as in Windows and with a few exceptions is your place for "favorites". Mine won't show icons on the desktop either but since I don't want them there it does not bother me.

It's only my preference and from what I have seen the rest of the world disagrees, but a cluttered desktop is, for me, a negative. I like menus and lists. Go figure.

Thanks guys... I live in North Miami. There are two Apple stores near me. (Within 12-15 miles) In the weekends you cannot see their FLOORS! (SO many people.) On the weekdays, a wait of an hour or so... Mind you I have been to them twice, (made appointments.) 1st time was a 20 minute waite on a week day and the 2nd time almost an hour, also on a week day!!

Hopefully, you have an Apple store nearby. That's your best solution.

Apple, in its infinite wisdom, has chosen to "hide" vulnerable folders to "protect" them from accidental abuse at the hands of an unskilled user... The "desktop" and "applications" folders are among those protected.

However, it is easy to access those folders from the Finder. In Finder, simply open the "Go" tab (at the top of the screen) and select the folder from the drop-down list,

Hope this helps.

I don't know. I guess that's a Mac for ya. My sister gave her old MacBook to me just so that I could try and figure out how things work on a Mac. I'm tellin' ya, it's not easier than my PC. The file system and where it decides to bury all the pictures is impossible. Shit, sometimes I don't see the main drive and sometimes I do.

The best thing to do with that computer is to dump it and get one with a windows operating system. Apples are only good for graphics designers. You will never convince Me otherwise so save Your time and don't even say it!

I totally agree with you and the others with the same opinion... However, my background is abstract painting using acrylic paint. At an "advanced age" l had the opportunity to go back to college for awhile, and did "Photographic Science." I was the OLDEST, and the WORSE in my classes.. But l must say, the Apple computer was NOT one of my disappointments. But OTHER than graphic images and art, it's probably usless. But THAT'S all l need.
Fast forward from 2 years ago, and l am merging my painting and photography into one.
I now have a Website, so if you want. please take an opportunity to view my work at:
