The 105mm is very good. If you buy one used, know which version you are getting. Nikon made several over the years.

It depends on what you intend shooting. If it is insects then you probably need a lens of 90 mm or longer. With anything less than this you would have difficulty getting close to the insect for 1:1 or 1:2 shooting as the working distance would be very small. You could pose this question in the True Macro section where experts would be happy to advise you on the different makes, types and on used lenses too.

My vote goes to the 60mm f2.8 D. I use mine as ny "normal" lens for my full frame DSLR. It is a superbly sharp lens with a moderately fast light capturing capability.

Jerry's suggested 105mm is also a great lens; but for an entirely different range of macro imaging. They both will work to great effect on your body. . . only in different imaging ranges. Remember that your crop sensor body will be turning the 60mm into a 90mm while the 105 will capture images like a 158mm lens. so you need to decide which suits your desires and needs for macro imaging.

Just so you know for true macro image 1:1 the 60mm nikon focus distance is 4 inches from subject. Now a 100mm will give you 6 inches working distance to subject. I own the 60mm and it's a Great Sharp lens, but I also own a Tokina 100mm that I prefer for the working distance. Get the 100mm range as the 150mm and 200mm range start getting to heavy and as the distance to subject grows so does the ability to light properly. Lots of info over at the Macro site where the day to day macro folks can help......

I have the Sigma 105 macro on my D7200 and it's a great lens. thinking of selling it for the 150. I had this lens a few years ago and the increase in working distance is awesome for insects. only problem is it's a big heavy lens, but the tri pod collar on a mono pod makes it easier to handle. actually, it's hard to find a bad macro lens.

Since you're shooting with a D7000 you might also check out the Nikon 85mm f/3.5 DX VR micro lens. It's a little more compact and lighter than full frame lenses. It wouldn't be as front heavy on the D7000

"Best" is relative. If you are planning to shoot any kind of flying insects, the 60 makes that task more difficult with a working distance of 4". The 105 has worked for me, but I'm ok with being patient. Other wise consider a Sigma 150 or 180. As Martin advises, go to the UHH Macro section and look at the regular contributors. Tinusbum & Screaming Scott, for example....

Look at the Nikon 200mm f4 macro, expensive and a bit heavy but very sharp and you don't have to work so close to the subject.
I bought one almost 8 yrs ago, still going strong started using it on a D300 then a D7100 next a D800 and now a D810.
Oh I own a Nikon 60mm f2.8 macro, used it twice didn't like being so close to the subject, looked at the Nikon 105 2.8 macro very nice but the same problem .

Others have suggested some great lens options for you. Depending on your subject....and how close you want to get to it....you might want to consider a good long lens and use extension tubes to allow closer focus. A good set of extension tubes (three different sizes to a set), with complete electrical connectivity between camera and lens, can be purchased for WAY less than the cost of another lens. Just a thought.

I often use the Nikon 105 f2.8 Micro lens as my all around, every day lens on my Nikon D800. It is great for 1:1 photos of insects or tiny flowers which I love to shoot. But it also does a great job for me as a portrait lens or just a lens I want to have with me when a scene needs to be photographed.

As others have said it depends on what you want to photograph and the camera you have. If you are into landscapes, people and static micro shots like stamps and coins the 60mm Nikkor will be fine. But if you want to do insects then you will want the 105mm.
