On a recent vacation, when I ran out of memory in my little Nikon P7800, I discovered I had left the card in my laptop at home! The closest camera shop was 60 miles away on country roads so out of desperation I stopped at a rural farm hardware store and was directed back passed the feed and plow shares to aisle 6 where I found a scant supply of dusty, obsolete cables and connectors in a locked case. And there amongst all that stuff was the last 16gb Duacell Sd card in the county. Ever happen to you? I still have it in the camera and it seems to working O.K. but I did put a back up in my bag.

Never happened to me...I always carry at least 3 extra cards.
From now on, I don't think it will happen to you again.
I have however had a card go bad on me and lost every picture on that card.

Never misplaced an SD card but in August I about to take a photo of the castle above Cochem,Germany. I had found the ideal location on the hillside above the castle, set up my tripod only to discover that I had left my quick release plate at home in Canada. Three days later when I attempted to recharge my D500 I discovered that I had accidentally thrown my charger plug away while cleaning up my RV's kitchen.

This happened to a young man on this forum traveling in South America. Like you, after much shopping around, he finally found something he could use, a micro card. As that is the main card for cell phones. Luckily it came with an SD card adapter. He said he couldn't understand why SD cards aren't readily available in all countries, based on the tourist trade. Another uhh member, visiting Israel, forgot to bring his battery charger to his camera. None, in Israel were available. He decided to have a rush delivery to his hotel from America, which turned into a nightmare for him, because of Israel's tight security measures. Lesson. Don't forget your gear. Every country does not have a convenient Best Buy Store type to visit.

It happened to me once, at the Philadelphia flower show several years ago. My SD card went full and I forgot to grab a spare on my way out the door. I had to buy one at the flower show at more than double what the card would have cost most anywhere else. I now always carry a spare CF, SD and XQD card in my wallet. Good thing they are small.

The clerk at the farm supply store told me it happened to her "all the time". I think she was just trying to make feel better.

It's good to have a camera with two memory slots... Sorry you had this happen. I think everyone of us have had some sort of disaster happen on a photo trip... I remember back in the film day shooting some models and wondering why I was getting more than 36 exposures... no film in the camera...holy crap! felt like a moron.

I always plug the camera in to download using the USB cable. Can't forget it that way. I also use the camera to erase images after I check the download. Last job is put the battery on to charge whilst checking the images. That way everything is ready to go 'for the next time'.

I think I need a checklist that would include all this common-sense advice. But I am feeling a little better after learning of some of the mistakes we've all made or probably will make eventually. The trouble with checklists, of course, is there is always something lurking that we never anticipated. ;^}

Under no circumstances would I ever leave home with a camera and not have extra cards and batteries with me. Just old fashioned I guess.

No matter how carefully you pack, it's always possible to forget something. Luckily, you wee able to buy one.

I went to the local wetlands one day, not realizing that I had left the SD card in my computer (I since always have a backup). That was the day a crested cara-cara landed 10 feet in front of me, danced around a little bit, flew off - flew in a circle and came back and landed again right in front of me to torment me some more! Never again!

I was at the Jefferson Memorial in Washington and discovered that my card was at home. No blank cards to be had at the gift shop and no other stores within site. I ended up paying like $30 for a card containing stock images which had about 8gb available. Good stock images though. After that the camera was upgraded so I now have two SD cards in the camera at all times and I carry extras.

I'm glad I'm not the only one to have an equipment problem when away from home!! No problems with cards (yet) but forgot a charger for my camera when I was on a trip to Scotland a couple of years ago. I had to wait for 5 days until we returned to Edinburgh where I could purchase a 'universal' charger. Lost a lot of photo opportunities because of that bonehead mistake. The 'universal' charger occupies a permanent place in my carry on suitcase now!!
