I have a canon t5i and am looking for a good wide angle lens but not sure what to buy. Should I get something with a low f stop? Going to Ireland next year and I only want to bring a couple lenses.

Fortunately, most W/A lenses have large apertures. Look at Tokina - lots of bang for the buck. I use the 11-16mm on a crop sensor and then got the 16-28mm for full frame.

That could depend upon what other lenses you have. If you already have the 18 to 55, or 18 to 135 then I would consider the EF-S 10 to 18mm. Good, wide, inexpensive, small, and light.

Any idea of what types of things you plan to photograph?

Now what do you think? You have a good camera. Why not put a good lens on it if you can afford to do so? Of course a lower Fstop will give one an advantage in low light conditions that one can could easily miss with something like an F3.4 or higher. Just common sense.

I have the Canon 10-18 for my T4i, not esp fast but light and easy to carry, I'm happy with it, just used it for almost the whole of our Maine trip, photos coming in a couple of days , Bob

Great Question. Jerry's 11 18 and 61 28 it an excellent recommendation. I bought 16 70 Sony zeiss for my crop a6300.
I find 16mm to be the best wide for general use. I need a 10 to 18 but it is very expensive. You can buy a fixed 16 and just use that.

The EFS 10-18 is your best bet. Here's a review.

Sigma 10-20mm F3.5 at $449.00 or the Canon EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 at $279.00. The Sigma at $449 would be my choice (the price was much higher when I got my Canon 10-18) due to the better build and the f3.5 through the range. Better performance indoors.

The Tokina 12-28mm f4 has good speed, WIDE range and resonable cost.

The gold standard wide angle lens for a Canon APS-C camera was always - and still is - the Canon EF-S 10-22mm wide angle lens. It is a spectacular lens always claimed to be an "L" quality lens (but is not for a full-frame camera). But several years ago Canon came out with the 10-18mm lens which reportedly has just as good optics in a lighter build at half the price - about $300. You can't go wrong with that lens. Hoggers who have it rave about it. Not to be tiresome ( I often reference this post when folks ask about a wide-angle lens for a Canon), but look at:

I agree that the Canon 10-22 is a great lens for your camera. And here's a shameless plug: I have one for sale on the Classifieds. Make me an offer.

I have a Canon T3i. On a recent trip to France and Ireland a Canon 18-135 STM and a 12-28 Tokina f/4 covered my needs nicely. Much as I would have liked to have my tripod, I did not wish to carry it. Sure wish I had taken the monopod I picked up after returning home.
