This might be an effort by Sony to clear inventory in advance of a major new camera announcement, but who cares? If you've been thinking about an a7Rii for your landscape or portrait work, or an a7Sii for video or astro, now is a great time to pick up a new body for around what used ones were selling for yesterday. And these are USA models with full US warranty.

Amazon, Adorama, and others are bundling these with things like a grip, extra batteries, SanDisk memory cards, and a plethora of other goodies for $2,398. If you're interested in one, it's worth looking around to see what kinds of bonus goodies you want.

No word on how long this special will last, but Sony has a history of unannounced specials that come and go quickly. I picked up my a77ii right after it came out for $848 just before it went back up to $1,198, where it stands today.

I won't include a link, lest the overzealous link police move this to la la land, but if you were to search for SonyAlphaRumors (or just add the ubiquitous .com to that), you'd be able to get more information.

Like the one earlier this week (that turned out to be a video camera)? I jest, as I know Sony has a much bigger announcement planned and has requested press to assemble on different continents for the live reveal. But it'll be something out of my price range and it won't help me to choose between the a7Rii and a99ii. I'm still stuck there, but this deal is drawing me to the a7Rii (and an a6k body for sports). The only thing holding me back is the crop sensor on an a6k not being as good as the full frame a99ii for sports (I don't want to sacrifice 2/3 stop of light with the a99ii as compared to the a7Rii).

It's only about 30%, a little less than 1/3 of a stop... but in return you get a MUCH better, faster AF system.

DG, I am betting Sony will announce a new camera... the A9R with a HUGE resolution sensor. 100MP maybe? And yeah; it WILL be out of our price range.

But dropping the price on the A7RII means the A7RIII or A8R is right around the corner. And those WILL be affordable for the average Joe.

Cholly, I do expect Sony to announce a new camera or two, probably either a high-res a9 or a7Siii based on rumors and these new discounts (although lots of folks expect an a7iii). Do you really expect that high a res? My guess is 42-50MP for an a9R (or a7Riii). And I know many claim the a99ii's mirror comes with the cost of only 1/3 stop, but DxO's testing gives the a99ii a 2317, which is 18% (or 2/3 stop) lower than the 3434 it gives the a7Rii.

So I was trying to decide between a used a7Rii (with a used a6k for sports) or just a used do-everything a99ii for around the same cost, and I had pretty much decided on the latter. But now that I can get a NEW a7Rii for what a used one cost yesterday, I don't know. I would prefer to buy new. I've bought tons of used lenses, but I've never bought a used camera (not digital anyway).

New is DEFINITELY better.

DG, I don't think you can go wrong either way... only instead of the A6000, step it up to one of the cameras with Steady Shot. OTHERWISE you'll be stuck with having to buy OSS lenses.

GOOD LUCK EITHER WAY SIR!!!

Rumor is that Sony may come up with an A7r3 and an A9s?

There are all sorts of rumors, but personally, I kinda doubt we'll see both an a7Riii and an a9R because they'd be so similar, probably. As far as the a9S, I wonder as well because the a9 is already so damn good in low light and video. Maybe, as rumored, an a7Siii that is more optimized for video.

Many others are speculating there'll be an update to the a7ii that will be a scaled-down a9. Who knows? We should see something of real substance announced Wednesday from Sony's worldwide press event. Sony also recently reaffirmed continued support for its a-mount line The a77ii is a bit dated (three years old) and would benefit from a few more focus points and a back-illuminated sensor, so that's my guess for a coming announcement. I think the other will be a high-res e-mount, as I explained above. We'll see.

Cholly, what do you think?

BTW I can't edit my previous post so a correction: I wrote that the a7Rii is 18% better in low light than the a99ii according to DxO. That was a typo. I should have written 48%. My analysis was correct that 48% (not 18%) is a hair under 2/3 stop (DxO claims that every 25% equals 1/3 stop).

By the way. Have you heard if the a9 is being used for any professional sports yet?

DG, here is my thinking;

The LAST time Sony got a bunch of industry bloggers, Sony Artisans, and YouTube personalities together, they announced the groundbreaking and earth shaking A9.

They are rounding up the usual suspects AGAIN, so I'm going to ASSUME they have something HUGE to announce. YOUUUUUGE!

As for the DxOMARK score; you have to look at their sensor use case definition:

https://www.dxomark.com/About/Sensor-scores/Use-Case-Scores

Sports & action photography: Low-Light ISO

Unlike the two previous scenarios in which light is either generous (studio) or stability is assured (landscape), photojournalists and action photographers often struggle with low available light and high motion. Achieving usable image quality is often difficult when pushing ISO.

When shooting a moving scene such as a sports event, action photographers’ primary objective is to freeze the motion, giving priority to short exposure time. To compensate for the lack of exposure, they have to increase the ISO setting, which means the SNR will decrease. How far can they go while keeping decent quality? Our low-light ISO metric will tell them.

The SNR indicates how much noise is present in an image compared to the actual information (signal). The higher the SNR value, the better the image looks, because details aren't drowned by noise. SNR strength is given in dB, which is a logarithmic scale: an increase of 6 dB corresponds to doubling the SNR, which equates to half the noise for the same signal.

An SNR value of 30dB means excellent image quality. Thus low-light ISO is the highest ISO setting for a camera that allows it to achieve an SNR of 30dB while keeping a good dynamic range of 9 EVs and a color depth of 18bits.

A difference in low-light ISO of 25% represents 1/3 EV and is only slightly noticeable.

As cameras improve, low-light ISO will continuously increase, making this scale open.

The A7RII DxOMARK low light score is 3434, where as the score for the A99II is 2317... a difference of 32%, so by their definition, a little more than 1/3 of a stop and also a little more than just slightly noticeable. Would you accept "barely" noticeable?

Barring a purchase of the A9... that's the trade-off for really good PDAF tracking with a 42 mp CMOS sensor.

Here's an article from the Kentucky Derby:

AND a Getty photographer shooting "Football" on the Continent:

So the answer is "yes"... just from this quick cursory search.

Nikon got purchasers lined up before Sony’s announcement. What happens beyond today will depend partly on what DxOMark scores show, and partly on other marketing issues such as how real purchasers view comparative lens lineups.
