Windows Update

I just updated Win10 today and all went ok I guess. After all updates were installed and the restarts were done now the computer will not open. I have a black screen and the circle is just going round and round with no end in sight. It's been quite a while. Any advice?

Sounds like it isn't done yet. Let it run an hour or so. If it still doesn't come back, pull the plug on the computer and restart it. Same thing happened to me. Win 10 updated itself without warning and got caught in a loop. After that I disabled future updates.

The same thing has been happening with my desktop Windows 7 Ultra for the past 10 months. There is nothing I have been able to do to get around it.

Just walk away for an hour or so and it will finish.

It does not happen with my regular laptop Windows 7 but it’s also slow on my Asus notepad with Windows 10.

Microsoft does not seem to have a clue (that they will admit to) why it’s happening.

That's what I've done so far. It wouldn't stop so I turned it off and restarted and it came right back up and continued the update. I actually started this up date as I went to updates to do it. I usually try to keep things updated but I am sick of Win10.

I'd let it run overnight. It should be fine in the morning.

Next time you upgrade do a cold boot, not a "Reboot". Shut the computer down from the "Shut down" button on the Windows menu, wait 10-30 seconds, turn the computer on with the on/off pushbutton and walk away for a while.

The fix MS suggested was a fresh install if Windows. I'm not about to do that.

This isn't meant to start one of those my computer is best wars as no system is perfect.

I used to do fresh installs of Windows all the time, eventually got tired of it, and bought my first Mac. I don't have to do all that stuff anymore.

And - here's the punchline - I don't think it is Microsoft's fault and it doesn't necessarily mean my Macs are "better". Macs are in a much, much more controlled environment - the OS only runs on Mac hardware. Microsoft on the other hand has to run on a billion (may be a slight exaggeration) different hardware combos. The hardware permutations that Windows has to deal with dwarf what OS X has to deal with and then throw in the huge amount of software combos, video drivers, etc. that can exist with Windows that I've always been surprised that Windows even works.

All that being said, I simplified my life and went with a somewhat more controlled environment and reduced my frustration. Hopefully, as you read this you'll appreciate that I used the words somewhat and reduced.

I can’t give Microsoft a pass on this one. I have been dealing with Microsoft since they took DOS over from IBM. They just don’t have a good track record with major releases that turned out to have problems - remember ME, Vista, Windows 8? Yet Windows 98, XP and 7 were relatively stable. The only supplier I rank lower is Adobe.

I agree that Apple and Mac seem to have a simpler environment but that may be because they are not too big to fail so they are more careful.

I’m stuck with MS mainly because so many products I am accustomed to using are designed for Windows.

I have had quite a few issues with Windows 10 update (and Windows 10, in general). If it continues to be stuck, and you power cycle it, it will eventually abort and give an error code under Settings/"Update and Security". Also, under Settings/System/About, it will tell you what build you are currently at. Post that info here, and I will see if I can give you some advice.

However, I have one system that is still stuck trying to go from build 1607 to 1703, so if your system is stuck there, we may be in the same boat.
