Buying on UHH

I have been noticing some nice prices on Nikon lenses recently in the Members Buy/Sell Section. I purchased a lens from a long time (1000’s of posts) member once and was totally satisfied with the price I paid and the item I received. Many of the items posted are from new members with no history here. I don’t think they are scams but what is the best way to protect yourself when buying and/or when selling on a forum site? Is PayPal the way to go.

It is my understanding that Paypal protects both buyer and seller...I believe the funds are held until the transaction is satisfactorily completed. Haven't done this myself so will watch this thread with interest.

Yes. It gives you some leverage to find a satisfactory solution to a problem sale. I buy a fair amount of items on eBay both photography and other items. I rarely have a problem but when it has happened PayPal has been able to resolve the problem quickly and with satisfaction, usually for both parties. Works for me.

And yet, although PayPal is the way to go, there are several buying UHH members that don't/won't use PayPal for a variety of reasons. And so while they could be protected they aren't. Personally I wouldn't use any other form of payment for purchase from a private party on the Internet whether it be UHH, Ebay, etc.

I have had no problems buying from UHH members (Lenses, Cameras). Got great prices I felt. Yes, PayPal is the way to go for nearly any purchase. They saved my ass once so to speak. I had a problem with a vendor, a camera repair shop. PayPal froze their account and the vendor was on my other phone before I even got off the phone with Pay Pal! The silly vendor still took three days to do want I wanted before I contacted Pay Pal again to unfreeze their account. Yes, I've heard so sellers not like Pay Pal because they do usually side with the buyer even when the dealer was in the right (how objective is any of this?).

Thanks all for your input, I will be using my Pay Pal account when buying in the future.
