I've been using Lightroom v5.7 for years with no difficulties. I may consider one of the newly announced versions in typer future.
Have tried many alternatives and been disappointed.
B.S. Less capable editing tools will produce less capable results.
So what software do you use?
As a Lightroom user, who is really enjoying the latest CC version, I certainly don't feel like a victim. You get what you pay for, and IMO the LR/PS combo are about the best deal in photography at $9.99 a month. I waste a LOT more than that on stuff that's not nearly as worth while.
Actually, none of us are "held hostage." We either choose to use the program or choose to use some other program. I initially had some trouble upgrading this time, but I think that's because my catalog (nothing to do with photos) is so large (I've edited over 10,000 photos with it). On the second try I upgraded my primary catalog and two other catalogs I use without a problem.
If you are unsure if you will continue to use LR, then be sure to use the Save option in preferences that will allow you to utilize your edits in other programs, such as bridge and PS, not sure which other programs it will work with. This option saves the edits into the sidecar file of a RAW file and into the file itself for JPG and TIFF. If you do not do this, the edits are only saved in the LR catalog, which could turn out to be a problem in the future in some way.
I have never used cloud storage and probably will not use it but I will, at this point, continue to use the LR classic program: I just fear that the original LR, as it is today, will go away and I'll have to use something else. I don't want to use another program as LR meets all my basic photo needs and I'd like to just keep using the program.

100% correct. Anyone who prefers another product is free to chose from a pretty long list of available programs. No one is forcing us to use LR. The majority prefer LR. So what. I yet to see a complaint the other way around.

I'm a big fan of lightroom and most other raw converters don't compare very well. At least until i found this
https://www.alienskin.com/exposure/download the trial and give it a go, you already can use it if you are familiar with lightroom. You can use it with lightroom too or photoshop.
I'm quite impressed with it and it's a little more feature rich compared to lightroom classic.

I find Corel Paintshop Pro more than meets my needs at a fraction of the Lightroom cost. Not so sure the “get what you pay for” cliche is directly apposite. To each his/her own.
I purchased the last software version 6.0 and am totally pleased with it. Installed on three computers and works well for me. For my purposes no reason to go for the monthly subscription; you are subject to subscription increases and if you stop you may lose some control of your edited images.

Are you saying that your program can do what LR and Photoshop can? And at a much lower price? Now Corel may provide everything that YOU need or I need, but Steve is a Professional photographer with exceptional skills, so his needs are very different from us snapshot shooters. Don’t you think?

My point is that you LR users are now forced to pay subscription fees as long as you want access to your library structure. I organize everything in Windows folders and that’s enough for me.

The non-subscription version is being dropped.

I’ve seen people spend more on a Latte!
