These two images were a test for the new Aurora 2018 software. The first image is the raw NEF file. I forgot to reset to Aperture Priority from manual and got this nearly black image. For illustration, I turned the NEF raw file to a jpeg for posting here.
The second image is what happened when I loaded the raw NEF file into Aurora 2018. I then made a very few minor adjustments. An amazing save. Image taken with a D300 and the 18-200 kit lens several years ago.
Again Download is a must to see the detail and colors.

I use Aurora 2018 also and I really like it. That's an amazing example of its power.
Another reason to always shoot raw.
Incredible save. Excellent processing.

Save these for when someone asks for a reason to shoot in raw.
While I agree that the software is quite remarkable, I believe if I were shooting in jpeg (e.g., my P900) I just might have noticed the error by looking at that little screen on the back of my camera and would not have to wait until post-processing to correct. Frankly, the self-righteousness about shooting in raw is a little overwhelming. Lots of photos are taken for reasons other than hanging on the wall or satisfying a client and jpeg is just fine.

Raw is great, esapecially when you have lots of time or inclination to work in post flow at a computer, I get it! I use a D800, Trinity set-up that would have yielded me the same initial photo, however I also use a Fiji XT2 (now much more of the time, raw & jpeg) and the original photo would not even had made it to its sensor because of the fantastic technology that is afforded by the EVF. These danged little mirrorless cameras are simply putting my “big rig” out to pasture for anything less than massive blow-up photos (which are far and few between in my current world).
