Tesla has specific guidelines for extinguishing a fire in one of its cars.

I think my initial instinct to stay away from these vehicles was a good one.

Doesn't water + lithium = spontaneous combustion?

Sounds like it takes LOTS of water to cool it and finally put it all out.

A nice tutorial for those smug individuals who are so sure they are saving the world by buying an electric car!

I remember a decade or so ago they issued the real "green" footprint of a Prius versus a hummer lifecycle, and the hummer won because of the end-of-life disposal of the batteries!

Yeah, there's always that factor. Besides, how long does it take to "fill" a Tesla. I can drive into a gas (petrol) station with an almost empty tank and be on my way in about 10 minutes or less. Additionally, there are any number of places to repeat that along the way to where ever I'm going. Run out of "Juice" with a Tesla between Blythe and Indio and AAA isn't going to do much but tow it somewhere. That somewhere may or may not have the means to "fill" the tank. If they do have the equipment that will take several hours. That's practicality? I think not.

Exactly. I am in the busines and the total supply chain footprint of green impact is marginal to negative. (Check out what it takes to make a solar cell in Malaysia....we are not making the planet more green, we are making western society more green on the backs of polluted economic activity in the emerging markets.
...ever been to Beijing or Shanghai? I go there 4-5 times a year and you can look straight up and still not see the sun some days.

And for the next little dirty secret....search " datacenter energy costs " and see what you come up with....

For those bleeding heart greens out there...shutoff your smartphones and stop streaming youtube videos if you want to save the planet :-)

(Tongue in cheek....not trying to be offensive...just trying to be funny....with a little edge)

In the end, I believe the technology progress is a net benefit for all....I am just a little more honest about the journey.

Those smug individuals don't think past themselves. Someone has to produce the electricity that is being used to recharge that battery, in the case of the Tesla. So, fire up those coal burning generators and put out some electricity for those who need to charge their cars.

Now if one wanted to produce a vehicle that was efficient, look to railways for an example. It costs approximately $0.03 to ship one ton of freight one mile. That's the shipping cost, not the operating cost. Now that's efficiency.

You made a good point, but also missed one. If you can look up and not see the sun, think of all the people being saved from skin cancer. Now that's a plus.

I know exactly what you mean. I was in Beijing Shanghai in 1998, and looking straight up in either city, I could not see the sun. I did see the moon and stars, but no sun. I tried it during the day, and there was the sun!

And as I have mentioned before, the human toll and enviromental cost of mining operations needed the extract the minerals required.
