Discovered this huge praying mantis in the garden this morning

I know you must have been using a macro, but exactly how close were you? Nice shots by the way. You must have kept a big smile on your face to keep it calm.

Gspeed, how "huge" was it? I was mowing out at my mother's last summer and saw one that was probably 4 1/2 to 5 inches long. I was amazed!, didn't realize they ever got that big. I also could have kicked myself for not having my camera with me.

I meant to use my macro but I had my portrait lens on my camera and used that with the tripod. The sun was harsh or I would have been able to get more detail. The praying mantis cooperated for a very long time and indulged both my husband with his iPhone camera and me.

I think the praying mantis was about 4" in length.
