Lightroom Classic...to upgrade or not upgrade?

I've been reading all about the two versions of Lightroom and cannot decide what to do. Also, there is no mention of how it will work on Apple's OS "High Sierra". I haven't upgraded to the new IOS and I think I'll wait to upgrade to Lightroom Classic.

Victoria Brampton (The Lightroom Queen) suggests trying it out in a new catalog...now THAT'S scary, if the new LR should be "tried out" first!!!!!!

There's a lot of talk about jumping ship. I've ben using Adobe CC for 3 years and I'm finally very comfortable with Lightroom and have learned a lot about using Photoshop. I'm not ready to look for new software to learn...YET!!!!

Anyone brave enough to upgrade?

I'm staying with Lightroom Classic, which appears to be the same as what I have been using. And it keeps Photoshop. I'm not going to install Lightroom cc.

Watch this Uber Geek Tony Northrup video:

There are some very cool features added to Lightroom Classic CC. Going to make some changes to my workflow for sure.

The “upgrade” your catalog is not a big deal, that has been needed before with a version upgrade, I am running High Sierra too, did not hesitate with going thru the CC upgrade process for Photoshop, Bridge, Lightroom and Camera Raw.

Lightroom copies and upgrades your catalog when it first launches, any need to go back to the old version - simple, reinstall the old version and open your old catalog still sitting there, or use one of the backup copies you make each day, week or month.

Images are not stored “in” Lightroom or the catalog, so they are never in danger during an upgrade, in fact during the upgrade through the CC app, you can choose to uninstall the old versions or leave them on disk just in case

I am using High Sierra and upgraded to Classic with no problems at all. It works the same as the Lightroom we know and love except it is noticeably faster. Haven't tried the new options yet, but so far I am totally happy with it.

I have upgraded to Classic, has some new features. What the Lightroom Queen was talking about is the new Lightroom CC which is an entirely different product, which some people are calling LR light since it is missing a number of the Classic features and is a good product for those who use cell phones to take images

It's too confusing, with contradictory statements. "Lightroom Classic CC 7.0 (the new name the folder-based version of Lightroom)..." What is "folder-based"? I don't recall seeing that term before. Does it mean cloud-based? Why confuse things with "Classic"? Was the previous CC version called LR 6?

Apparently, support for the stand-alone LR 6 will continue till the end of the year. After that, people buying new cameras might want to select one of the many alternatives to LR.

Why would you not upgrade to LR Classic? If you have been using Adobe for 3 years, you've accepted every upgrade along the way. The only difference I see is a little quicker and range mask has been added. I installed and went back to business as usual.

I upgraded last night, and don't seem to notice much change except as others have said, importing is faster. I can't notice a change in speed when moving from image to image though, but I think that was supposedly only like 10-15% faster, and how does the average person measure that?

What I don't know is where it's asking me to download the Lightroom CC (not Classic) Is that included with the membership, it hasn't been made clear. I don't use my cell phone for photos, and haven't done LR mobile, not really interested.

What the heck is the "new" lightroom CC? Is it just LR mobile with a different name? Seems that the old naming system made more sense, but whatever.

From my blog, today "First a comment. I think Adobe next stop is to correct the name changes. The old Lightroom CC is now Lightroom Classic CC, and the new mobile version is Lightroom CC. It would've made more sense to keep the old name Lightroom CC and call the new version Lightroom Mobile CC."

I use lr mobile on my tablet and phone and after updating lr to classic cc I also had to update my lr mobile on the Android devices. I am still confused as to how lr cc and lr mobile relate. Although lr mobile still works pretty much the same using g collections. With thumbnails stored on my local devices

Agree!

Adobe has great products, love the subscription model and price for Photographers package, but they have a lousy grasp on clarity for marketing.

Their whole Creative Cloud initial marketing/naming seemed to miss the mark, confusing everyone into thinking CC was all cloud based computing, that the product was in the cloud vs on your computer.
