I'll be there next Summer as my youngest son just moved to Bozeman Montana, about an hour and a half away.... Looking forward to it. Nice crater shot... Any other pics to share ?

Thank you. I kind of goofed. These are my wife's shots that I wanted to throw out there for examples of a D7100 and the new Tamron 18-400. Not bad, a little soft. Good walk around lens. Comments are fine...just some handheld examples.

Wow, Bozeman! We have stayed in Gardiner the last couple times. Bozeman is a beautiful drive along the Yellowstone River. We just got in Thursday night and I haven't gone through my pics much. Nothing exceptional yet. Thanks for commenting!

Damn, now you've got me thinking of selling my Nikon 18-300 and getting this lens! Very nice captures here and I saw your previous post too...all good shots.

Did you have a chance to get out with Ron and/or Larry?

Funny! We saw Ron chasing bluebirds on the southern end of Swan Lake Flats earlier in the day and didn't know it was him. Anyway, he called that night and next day we found him back closer to Swan Lake shooting a couple elk that were close to fighting over the harem. We goofed for a while and I think our wives were ready to mutiny and find a warmer and more comfortable place. He was showing off some grizzly shots I think he got at Tom Minor Basin. We're skipping next year and planning for May of 2019. We've been 5 times since 2012 and Kathy wants a break. I should be shooting with Imagemeister next month at Merritt Island, Viera Wetlands or Melbourne. I'd love to do Corkscrew down in Naples, but I'll wait until my wife goes with me.

I wouldn't be too quick to give up the 18-300, but the extra length on the Tamron sure is nice for the wildlife. We shot in a lot of low light or overcast conditions and the Tam wasn't too bad. She likes the weight and didn't like my 70-200 2.8 with a 1.4. I kept switching between the 24-70 and 200-500 because I sold my D810 and the new camera has yet to arrive. As you know, Yellowstone isn't the place to be switching lenses! I'm quick, but the opportunities are quicker. We had a pack of 8 from possibly the Junction Butte Pack out in Lamar north of the Institute, but they were on the other side of the river. We stood in the cold for over an hour at 19 degrees a little after 7am and then hiked about four miles on Specimen Ridge from the Yellowstone Picnic Area and shot The Overhanging Cliff and Bannock Ford from the high point directing across from the Cliff. Kind of a neat perspective. Yeah, I carried both lenses. We had a few Bighorns up there so it was worthwhile...I think. Catch you again, Dave.

Thanks for the update Dave and it sounds like you had some fun adventures. We're booked for next May and may spend more time around Swan Flats. Haven't got a Grizzly photo in two years and think I'm about do...funny how they can go in streaks. I tried one afternoon for Pika's over at Hell Roaring but it was a mix of sun and clouds so didn't pan out.

Have fun in Florida and say hi to Larry for me.

We were there in June and had numerous grizzly, black and several cinnamon. We had so many bighorn we were just short of ignoring some of them, particularly on the north entrance road. This time we found our first and only four on Specimen Ridge, so streaks seem to be the rule.
Take care, Dave.

BTW, in June we got a few Sand Hill Cranes on the flats close to Bunsen's Peak.

Nice :) :)
Is the trail behind Grand Prismatic open again ??
It was closed for repairs last September when I was there
-
Tales of the one who went past the barriers, broke through the surface, with not even bones left the next day were more than sufficient to keep visitors out
-
I did see Grand Prismatic wayyyy back in 1974 - - but no 24MP Digicams then :( :(

The overlook opened in July this year. Three years ago we climbed the hill a month or so before a hiker was fatally injured by a falling tree on it. It was a steep maze with logs scattered all over it and rose over a hundred feet. They closed it down and built a path with an overlook. If you walk past the path, you're on your way to Fairly Falls, another worthwhile photo op, particularly in the spring.

Nice shots. I just hope old Yellowstone never blows her top or we are all a goner.

Between 11 and noon is pretty good and less steam in warmer weather.
