Thomas:
You really captured the moment. The series of shots are well lit, interesting and you care to scroll down to see how the series ends. Nice lens, no monopod used? Is it a heavy lens? I use a 80-400 4.5-5.6 as you know. It's a good lens but I wonder if yours is better and why?
Great stuff Thomas.
Have a good day.
Jules

Jules yes I use a Sirui P-424 monopod with a Sirui L-10 Head. Please keep in mind that the D3x weighs (1428g Measured) while the AF-S 200-400mm f/4 weighs (3661g Measured) so at 11.2 lbs (5089g) I can only hand hold for maybe 5 minutes or so... While BIF shooters use this lens hand held they are typically dealing with a 30 second burst at most. No way am I going to shoot four soccer matches in one day hand held, not going to happen.

Your AF-S 80-400mm 4.5-5.6 is a wonderful (and highly popular) optic and at 1570g is an order of magnitude lighter. It is razor sharp even wide open and has amazingly fast focus speed. You have chosen wisely here...

That said I had no other option but to choose a pro build optic since I shoot for specific clients not on spec. My clients expect me to shoot their kids no matter what... Yes I have to shoot in the frigid pouring rain, no excuses... See below. The 200-400mm has a hood which is over 5 inches deep and allows shooting in a driving rain storm. It's weather sealing is unequaled, can't tell you how many times I've been soaked to the bone yet this lens is totally unaffected. So I have to use the most germane tool available which I can afford. No I didn't pay $7K but rather half of that on a refurbished (by Nikon) unit. Same as my D3x which I didn't pay $7K but rather half of that for a refurbished (by Nikon) unit.

As for focus speed? You have to actually use this optic to believe it... Locks instantly, period! It's scary how fast it can move those glass elements... No screwdriver here... built in motor all the way... If you actually want to compare lenses optically go to DxOMark and see for yourself precisely how well the optics work across their enter range of local lengths and apertures... DxOMark is the de facto authority on camera lens optic (not my opinion but rather common industry knowledge).

Oh if you ever decide to move to the 200-400mm f/4 be certain to fit it with either the RRS or Kirk collar/foot. I opted for the Kirk variant and I'm very pleased with it.

Hope this helps Jules and I'm really looking forward to more of your superb action sports imagery from your upcoming late evening football game...

Thanks!

Thomas:
Thanks for all the very useful information you have provided. I guess I get a little frustrated when the lens doesn't focus as fast as I thought it should. I am a perfectionist my fault I guess. Always looking for ways to improve my craft. I paid less than half retail for the 80-400 from a private person. He was very nice about the price. At B & H I paid around 1300.00 for the 70-200 2.8 used and same store 1250.00 used for my 24-70 2.8. Great lens and fair prices. Why pay for a new one right. The 500 no choice 2,000. Oh well the challenge is what it is all about.
Be well,
Jules
