I think you got the right one.
I bought the push-pull because it was what I was used to before AF (like my Vivitar 70-210).
And they had no other option at that time.

If you were starting over, and keeping the dx, an 85mm 1.8 and a 24mm 1.8 would give you 4 different and useful fields of view. The Tokina dx will work on the D750 at 16mm. If your 35mm is the full frame version and not the dx version you might skip the 24mm. The primes should do better on the D750 than the normal zoom, but the 24-120 is pretty good. With the lenses you have, I would start with the 85mm prime.

Yes, I’m aware.
It’s the internet....
I don’t trust everything he says either, but he provides some good technical info like this.

Hello,
I am a photo enthusiast and purchased a D7100 about 4 years ago. I don´t use photography as a way of living but I try to get the best out my gear. During this time I´ve acquired some lens and my current DX lens lineup is:

1 Tokina ATX Pro SD 11-16 F2.8 (IF) DX II
2 AF-S Nikkor 35 mm 1:1.8 G
3 AF-S Nikkor 18-200 mm 1:3.5-5.6 G II ED
4 AF-S Nikkor 70-300 mm 1:4.5-5.6 G VR

During these 4 years I´ve mostly used 18-200mm as grab and go lens.
Despite the 18-200mm well known compromises in image quality, I was able to manage its pitfalls especially my photos have been mostly during daylight and the demands were not too high.

But, our mind and eyes change over time. Reasonable quality is ok but now I want to have a better gear and photos quality.
My main interests have been travel photography, motorcycle events and trips, Carnival shots (people) and surfing shots. Lately I´ve included landscapes and low light nude art as next fields of interest. I don´t think of macro or other specific areas like new born or wedding/social events. It may happen accidentaly but am I am not towards it.

Based on it, I´ve just purchased a D750. Now, additionaly to my DX team, my FX lineup is as follows:

1 AF-S Nikkor 24-120 mm 1:4 G ED and
2 AF Nikkor 35-70mm f/2.8 D (old lens but I got a bargain in mint condition) - I am loving it.

For the time being I don´t think selling D7100. I can still change my mind but I have the feeling that selling used gear does not pay back and I´d lose a backup. Still not 100% sure here.

I´d like a help from UHH experienced users for a new lens lineup considering I would keep DX team. Also, if possible, another suggestion in case I sell the DX team.

I feel that I will miss DX 18-200mm flexibility in D750.
I´ve read some reviews on FX 28-300mm and they are not exciting. Looks like it is not hugely better than DX 18-200mm. With the new D750, I want a step ahead.

I´ve read some FX 70-200mm f/2.8 VR II comparisons to DX 70-300 f/1:4.5-5.6 G VR and they normaly conclude their quality difference can only be seen in low light photos (and also much better f/2.8 bokeh). In daylight use, the result would be both similar.

I am a little confused on how to rearrange and considering my fields of interest, which suggestions would you make?
I still have some budget to buy lenses (or may sell the DX team). I just want to be sure that I will have a lineup which would be consistenly better and aligned to my interests.

Thank you.

You already have the 24-120, which is one of my favorites. You will not gain much going to the FX 70-200mm f/2.8 VR II, but, if you don't mind the weight of the 24-120 the 70-200 is not much more. The 70-200 II compares very well against the newer version, I doubt you will notice any difference in them. If you want to shot landscape I would suggest the 16-35 f4, other favorite FX lenses include, 85 1.8, 28 1.8, 24 1.8, and of course my favorite street lens, the 21 1.8.

Hi whwiden
Unfortunately my 35mm is a DX version and generates a huge vignette on FX sensor. I could resize it down to DX sensor size but results are not good.
Like you said Tokina 11-16mm is 100% ok on D750 starting from 14 mm on. It is a good lens (despite its horrible AF buzz sound).
I am testing around the 24-120mm. It looks good so far.
I will think about which primes would better fit in my photo style. I've always been dealing with zoom lenses and it is probably the time to get some primes in my lineup. Good suggestion.

Tks for your comments.

Thanks for your comments Jerryc41. It is a good reading stuff and helps me make up my mind.
For walk around photos, I may stick to D7100/18-200mm for a while. It does the job honestly. Buying an FX 28-300mm now would certainly drain off my budget, even if it is a good walk around lens for D750.

Currently I am enjoying the idea of having a 70-200 2.8 VR II which I can use on both D7100 and D750. I am reading around about it.

Also, I have the feeling that the old 35-70mm 2.8D (which results 52-105mm on D7100) my be a good companion to D7100 as a mid zoom/portrait lens.

Tks
Allan

Allan, I hope you understand that camera and lenses are only tools. Your photographs are only reflecting your expertise. Good gear is good to have but not a necessity when it comes to making photographs. If you do your part the camera and lens will do their part.

I do not own a D750 nor the 24-120 f4 VR lens but all I have seen from that combination has been excellent photographs. All zooms lenses have compromises but in general I would say that modern zooms have very good quality. It is up to the operator to bring back that quality in the photographs.

I own the first generation 18-200 f3.5-5.6 VR I lens, similar optically to what you have and I sincerely believe it is a very good lens. I am very satisfied with the quality of the images it makes for me. Keep the D7100 because I am sure you will not regret it.

Depending on the interest you have for certain subjects I am going to say that a 50mm lens could be a good choice for the full frame camera. If you like extreme wide angles something like the new 10-20 DX lens could be a good investment and Independent lens companies also offer good ones and that includes Tokina. The 10-20 is a DX lens.

In my humble opinion your D750 should be doing very well with the 50mm and 24-120 VR lens for the majority of the subjects you will encounter. If new interest arises with new subjects then you can select another lens that will fit your needs.

Usually simple is better.

The 18-200 f3.5-5.6 VR I lens has a very interesting history. The very first of these lenses were produced in Japan and are labeled as such. This was during a time when Nikon started shipping their production outside the country. Later 18-200 f3.5-5.6 VR I lenses production were out of country. The feeling is that the Made in Japan version was actually better, but this is all conjecture.

Allan, I have similar circumstances as you. I went from d7000 to the d750 with the 24-120 lens, which I may add has been superb for me. My dx lenses are 18-200, 18-55, 35mm prime, 11-16. The fx lenses that I added are the 100mm macro, 75-300, and 50mm prime. I will not sell my d7000 as I still use it as well as the dx lenses. The 50 mm prime is razor sharp and pretty fast. The Tokina 100mm is my macro/portrait lens and I like it a lot. Good luck and keep shooting away-enjoy your d750...Larry

Fully agree with you camerapapi!
After some thinking, I definitely decided to keep D7100. It´s been a great camera with 18-200mm being 80% on it.
However I have some trouble with low light photos and this is one of main reasons to look for a better camera/glass combination now.
D7100 is a really great camera but suffers in low light. Primes would help me but as I wanted to migrate to FX I bought this D750 and need to rethink my lens backpack.

Thanks for your thoughts.

It seems you solved easily your DX to FX migration.
I will have a look on the extra FX lenses you´ve purchased along with 24-120 f4. The 75-300 lens is the one with push/pull sliding zoom control?

Thanks for your comments Larry.
