Thomas you always say something nice.
Tomorrow I will be shooting a football that starts at 4pm, sun goes down around 5. I will switch from the 80-400 to 70-200 2.8 up the iso and see where it takes me. I might throw a flash in there at some point or just reduce noise in pp. What do you think?
Jules
Jules if you have an assistant that can hold your speedlight on a boom arm or such it could be a viable option...
However I strongly recommend you invest the time to test and master the technique... It can be (and is) a challenge...
FourSquare makes the perfect tool for this endeavor... A four speedlight mount in a 30" softbox which can be easily mounted on a handle/boom arm. You would be best served with radio transmitters/receivers in as I've found Nikon's optical triggers a bit flaky.
Below is an example of a fashion photo shoot using a speedlight with shoot through umbrella modifier mounted on a stand behind the brick columns out of frame. The scene was metered 2 stops under ambient and the speedlight was put on iTTL (I use Phottix radio transmitters/receivers owing to their robust build quality and high reliability). Kit and lens were pretty much the same as your kit (D7000 with an AF-S 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6).
In the example:
Model: Heather Jean Lilly
Wardrobe: Ralph Lauren
Accessories: Clutch by bebe
Hair Styling: Devon Baltimore
And yes I did makeup, photography and creative direction.
Please note that I scouted and tested BEFORE bringing the agency talent on location...
Hope this helps and you might research Dave Black (Nikon Ambassador) who uses speedlights to capture sports.
Thanks!

Great shots Thomas. Beautiful lighting and a really beautiful model.
Jules - as an aspiring hobbyist just starting to shoot school sports, impressive to see how you compose shots
Thomas - as always, beautiful. Show why you are the artist/professional and I am... still and will remain ... a hobbyist

David:
Thank you for the nice comment.
It takes practice, I have been shooting for over 30 years. I love what I do.
Go to the games and shoot a bunch and you will get there.
I really enjoy the sports section. The submissions are of a good variety and the photographers are willing to share their knowledge. I have never read a negative comment in this section. Thanks to all of you.

I truly believe the Hogs are always willing to help all photographers no matter what the subject.
To pass along tips, suggestions, etc.
david vt thank you for your very kind words... Rest assured they are deeply appreciated...
Albeit the credit truly goes truly to the entire team, I'm only a single player in the mix...
And yes Jules' technique is superb... Obviously reflects deep tenure and a love for the sport...
"I really enjoy the sports section. The submissions are of a good variety and the photographers are willing to share their knowledge. I have never read a negative comment in this section. Thanks to all of you..." Hangingon I'm totally with Jules' inference here, "the Hogs are always willing to help all photographers no matter what the subject" That said like you I find those on the Sports Section to have a passion for seeing others achieve... Wonderful synergy here... and a fabulous way to grow your knowledge base...
