The only problem, IMHO is that the strobe lights and chasing lights only detract from the Eiffel Tower.

Well the frogs have this argumentation over anything.... Centre Pompidou. Invalides, Champ Elysee, Arc de Triomphe to list only a few issues in Paris...

The Effel tower was long considered as an eyesore (still is). Never forget that is was a 'temporary' construction made for the 1889 World fair. I am not aware of any construct made for the World fairs (any year) that has survived this event (but then again I am likely mistaken - Come to think of it, there maybe a building in Montreal, Canada).

Hitler ordered it to be blown up toward the end of the war.
I heard the officer in charge couldn't bring himself to do it.

And who knows better than you about making stupid statements as a bid for attention. You are the master of that domain.

Actually he was to blow every bridges and monuments. The reasons for not doing it are likely not sentimental but pragmatic. Germany was losing the war and folks by then knew there would be a very personal pay back. War crime tribunals were already being setup and summary executions and lynchings were already taking place in Greece, Italy and France.

Incidentally, the movie 'Paris brule t'il' made on this very subject is highly inaccurate - French propaganda. This was made to demonstrate that not all German were bad, just in the nick of time to create of what would become the basis for Europe, after all, one 'saved Paris'.

Interesting, we actually can learn neat stuff here! (There is the Seattle Space Needle, too, speaking of eyesores.)

Gustave Eiffel also designed the Long Bien bridge in what was formerly North Viet Nam.

Thank you, I looked it up, the Seattle Space needle is ALSO a left over from the world fair (1962).

Now I wonder how many more there are around.

I took this image about 20 years ago on film. You mean I can expect a knock on my door by the French police now, just kidding. LOL. It is very dangerous to use a camera around the Eifel Tower, in my case one Gipsy watched me, he whistled and soon I was surrounded by them. Lucky for me a Gendarme appeared and they run. I am sure they were after my camera gear.

I had a similar situation photographing the Alamo at night. I had my camera on a tripod and was stopped by the Alamo police and was told I was a professional photographer and not allowed to take pictures of the Alamo at night because I was going to sell them. I was irked to say the least. I politely asked for a supervisor. When he arrived I explained that I was in town for an educational convention and was stopped for taking a picture of the Alamo at night because I was a professional photographer. I was told I had to get a permit. Just then another man showed up with a similar camera but with no tripod. He was allowed to continue obviously not a professional. At that point I asked to see the crystal ball they use to determine professionalism. I further asked for a letter stating that I was a professional photographer. They didn't. After some further discussion and my insistence that I be allowed to photograph an historic monument for sharing with my students back in my classroom and a phone call from my attorney, they allowed me to continue. I went back the next night but put a hand written sign on a leg of my tripod stating I was NOT a professional photographer.

Ps The next night I returned for some more shots and brought a sandwich and a drink from the hotel and was hoping the police would not think I was a food vendor.
