I have an iPhone 5 which works well except the photo screen has blacked out and I cannot take photos. Past photos come up fine and all other aspects of the phone are fine. I tried restarting, upgrading and pressing on the photo lens (a suggestion from the internet). Any other thoughts before I run to the apple store? Thanks
Do you have a repair shop in your area? My microphone/speaker system quit working on my 5c. I called Apple & they wanted $150 to fix it. The repair shop replaced the bad parts for $40. The place is called MDtekk & they are a nationwide chain, they say. You might check to see if there's one in your area. I had an earlier problem with the charger socket, and they fixed that one for free.

Google 'iphone blue screen of death' and try some of the hard reset suggestions. I know you don't have the blue screen problem, but it might be enough to solve your problem.

I had a 5 was paying $220 month . Grand daughter changed plan to $165 so I got an 8plus for $26.00 a month.
See if you have Batteries Plus in your area. They repair smart phones. If you make an appointment online, there is a discount.

I had this problem with my iPhone 6 Plus - but it was intermittent - sometimes just turning the phone off and on resolved the issue.
I get the sense this is an IOS issue (it only began after I had done one of hte upgrades) and not a hardware thing...so not sure a repair facility will be able to do anything.
The iPhone 6's had a camera recall. We took ours to the Apple store and they swapped out camera lenses in store.
When wife got hers back, she opened the camera app, screen was black!
Told them right then and there - they replaced the entire phone.
So, it may be more of an internal problem that a hard/soft reset won't fix. Since your 5 is probably not covered by insurance, upgrade and get at least the 7.
The 6s is a huge upgrade from the 5s.
Might just be time to get a new phone!
Ditto the Batteries Plus store.
Check you tube. They may have some information...
Not sure about iPhone5 but my daughter told me to press the 'home' button and the 'sleep' button at the same time to reset my iPhone6 when I had a problem. I don't remember if I had to hold them for a certain period of time or not.
