I went to an air show several yrs. ago. A C-17 demonstrated a short field takeoff and landing.
IMO stole the show. Fantastic plane.

Thanks for the comment!! Yep the C17A is quite an impressive aircraft, the short field capabilities are pretty amazing for such a heavy aircraft!

Being a former Vietnam era U.S. Army aviator and avid aviation fan, I was privileged to be invited on a tour of a C-17A Globemaster III conducted by the ANG 172 AW at their base at Jackson Medgar Evers international Airport. This unit is an important part of the USAF strategic airlift capability worldwide.

All photos are taken with my Pentax K-3 and Sigma 18-200 F3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM or smc PENTAX-DA FISH-EYE 10-17mm F3.5-4.5 ED[IF]. The fisheye was used for aircraft interiors and the 18-200 for all other shots.

All in all it was a very interesting tour. You will see that about half of my tour group was composed of women who were very interested in the aircraft and the unit and its mission. Warning "Old folks Alert" most of the group was composed of folks older than me, I'm 71.

Great shots. I've had the chance years ago to explore a C-5, but this is the first time I seen the interior of the C-17A. I believe my son had the opportunity to get some flight time in them.

Thanks for sharing.

Great pictures! My son flew the C-17 out of Charleston for 6 years as a SOLII pilot and after 3 years at the Pentagon, served 2 years as the commander of the 14th airlift squadron in Charleston. It is a wonderful plane and I had several opportunities to tour the plane. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the comment, I really appreciate it!! Size wise the C-17A is a bunch smaller than that big ole C-5 but the C-17 is a work horse. The C-5's have had numerous problems over the years which have limited their availability. Thanks for the comment and thank your son for his service!!

Thanks for the comment! Those guys who fly the Special Ops Low Level missions in these aircraft are special folks especially flying blacked out at night into unlit or minimally lit airfields. Thank your son for his service. Yes the C-17A is a fantastic aircraft with some great capabilities. I think these big birds are reaching the end of their service life, the one we toured was first delivered in 1996 but heck the B-52's were first delivered in the 50's maybe there is still a bunch of life left in them.

Again thanks for the comment!
