USS Laffey DD459 was sunk at the battle of Guadacanal, she took a 14 inch shell from the battleship Hiei, then a torpedo in her fantail, abandon ship was ordered, but before it was relayed she exploded with heavy loss of life, she never took any kamikaze hits that i know of, but DD754 was hit i think 5/6 times by them, but she survived and sits at Patriots point today.
I stand corrected. I saw the movie on board the DD754 describing the kamikaze attack in detail. Afterwards, I talked for awhile with the docent (an old Navy destroyer man) and asked if the kamikaze attack had sunk the original Laffe. He said no and mentioned the shells from the Hiei (he said 2 hits) and the torpedo, so I just assumed the kamikaze attack was on the DD459.
I was especially interested because my father-in-law was an officer aboard both the destroyers Lamson and Henley for almost 4 years in the Pacific in WWII - he retired as a Commander after the war. I have a copy of the Lamson’s Log and of course, having known him for almost 30 years before his death, I have heard many stories (some of which I videotaped) of the engagements. The Lamson’s crew held annual reunions for many years until the majority of the crew finally became too old or passed away.
