The National Museum of African American History & Culture opened just over a year ago. The building is unique and very different from most Smithsonian structures. The vast collection of artifacts is amazing and takes hours to explore. A lot of the interior of the museum is dark, making photography more difficult. The museum is also crowded most of the time. However, I managed to get some nice architectural shots and a few example of the types of displays inside.

There are four above ground levels plus a concourse and three history levels below ground.

The exterior is covered with 3,600 bronze-colored cast aluminum panels. In this shot you can see the sky through the panels.

From the inside looking out. I believe that is the Museum of American History that you can see through the panels.

Lots of glass behind the exterior panels.

Chuck Berry's Cadillac Eldorado - top level.

Cabin displayed on one of the history levels.

There are several upbeat, bright displays in the entertainment section of the top level.

Very high ceilings give a somewhat cavernous feel to the upper levels.

Most displays feature combinations of artifacts, photographs, videos and detailed narratives.

This artifact brought back memories. My dad had one of these antique corn planters when I was very young. I immediately recognized it.

Nice to see. I hope to get back to DC. Not there since 2000 and before that 1969.

I'm glad you enjoyed these. I really enjoyed this trip. We spent 6 days doing things we missed the first time.

Carol, you captured some absolutely beautiful photographs in difficult conditions; both in terms of working people and lighting conditions.
Great work.

Thank you, Gary. I'm a fussy photographer and probably make things more difficult for myself. The people part takes patience. Just as soon as one group steps out of your scene, more move in! But it's all fun and that's what it's all about!
Interesting set, Carol... thanks for sharing! Love Chuck's sweet ride!!!

Thank you, Angela! You're right about the Caddy. I probably spent more time with it than with anything else!
