Canon EF lens recommendation?

I am looking for an inexpensive successor to the "kit lens" that came with my Canon Digital Rebel XT, which I am reusing on my SL1. I have been looking at used Canon EF lenses (which would fit on my film Rebel 2000 body as well) and see several good options from the 80's and 90's in my price range ($100-150) that include metal mountings and the USM motor, some even have IS. I currently use an SL1 body and am aware of the 1.6x crop factor, and it's of no matter to me.

Are there any recommendations for lenses from this era that are very high-end and sharp and available now for much less money than they were new?

I am thinking like 28-100mm or something like that, a good range and a general purpose type lens that's better than the kit one.

Another possible option;

EF 28-105 USM ll. Make sure it's the 2nd version. There are others. Others here will chime in. If you need wider, there's the 18-135 EFS but more money. Good luck.

Any model of the EF 50 f/1.8 is a wonderful lens. The original has a metal mount and runs about $125 used, about the same price as the newest model new. The EF 24-85 f/3.5-4.5 is another sharp long-ago zoom that falls in your price range used.

A very good suggestion. Ebay is good for looking at prices, the Canon camera museum: http://global.canon/en/c-museum/series_search.html?t=lens&s=ef is good for browsing through what is available. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Canon-EF-28-105mm-f3-5-4-5-II-USM-Macro-28-105-3-5-4-5-905-/202080714000?epid=99692999&hash=item2f0cf2fd10:g:~KEAAOSwafBZ4Svs

Nice finds Peter, hopefully the OP sees them. Ebay and CL are my go to sites for used if Greentoe doesn't come through with new.

Why not get a better lens for the better camera? Use the Kit lens on the xti and get a nicer lens for the SL1.

Don't forget the EF-S 15-85mm (24-136mm equiv on a cropped sensor Canon). $640 on Canon refurb site. Very good lens!

When I bought my 20D over twelve years ago I sprung for a Canon 24-70 f2.8 L lens - it was expensive, especially new, but it has been my most used lens for the past decade plus.

I've used it on five different bodies and its still my favorite lens of all the ones I own. Its probably on my camera about 80% of the time I shoot with it.
