I went on a trip and was so upset that my 6 year old Nikon D5100 failed to focus.
I had it on auto focus and that has worked well for me in the past.
what can I be doing wrong?
change lens or clean contacts on camera an lens
You have some settings wrong that you have forgotten about, low battery. If you are a photographer you would then switch to manual focusing. That always works.
There are some situations where auto focus doesnt know what to do. A distant hazy shot, a lot of small near and far subjects near each other. Does it focus under normal conditions otherwise?
A friend of mine had a similar problem with her Nikon. She took it in for service and they apparently fixed the issue.

Does the AF search, or does it do nothing?
If it doesn't search, could you have accidentally and unknowingly moved either the switch on the camera or the switch on the lens to M?
Is the lens firmly seated in the camera?
Have you tried another lens to see if the same thing happens with the other lens?
If it does search, was it in a low contrast scene?
If all else fails try contacting NikonUSA, I have found them to be patient and helpful.
I had a problem with my auto focus on my canon. It turned out to be my third party battery pack was faulty. I tried taking it off and put a single battery in. This troubleshooting worked. I have bought the canon battery pack and have had no problems since. Clean all contacts and good luck.

Have you tried it with a different lens? If cleaning the contacts doesn't work, it and the lens will probably need a trip to Nikon. It's the motor in the lens that's doing the focusing. Depending on the cost, you may want to look for a refurbished camera or lens. You can sell the defective one on ebay "For Parts."

I had a similar problem on my D750 it was on auto focus both on camera and lens and I wondered. Was ready to call Nikon USA for an answer but looked that back and noticed that the OK dial was turned to "L" and changed it to the unmarked dot and that solved the problem.

Hit the two button reset first. Is your lens switch set to AF? You can always take it into a photo store and have them check it. Most guys and gals are willing to help you out.

Sometimes one one of my lenses I accidentally turn the lens switch from auto to manual. When this happens first thing I do is check the lens to make sure it’s on auto.
Does the lens have a AF/M switch? If so make sure it's set to AF; same for the camera body.
I thought I had that problem once. So disappointing to look through the viewfinder and it never comes into focus. Turns out I had bumped the diopter adjust on the viewfinder.
