The EF 16-35 II is a decent lens and should be dropping in price now that the EF 16-35 III is available. I have the II and it makes nice landscape images.

I often use a Tokina 16-28 on my D750. How wide you need depends on the situation. I also use a 28-300mm.

Landscape photography has always been the realm of wide angle lenses. Many photographers using cropped sensors have been very happy using the wide setting of their zoom (starting around 18mm) while others prefer to go ultra wide. Only you know what route to go as per your own expertise and taste.
I use Nikon gear and I use full frame and cropped sensors. The choices are different for both. With the cropped sensor I am using my 12-24-f4 AF-S often and with my full frame I can use that lens between 16-24mm successfully without vignette. A 35mm is a great lens for landscape photography and why not, at times the use of of tele to compress perspective is what is needed.
As you can see there are choices and your selection depends more on what focal length you use more often and I hope you know that by now.

Another vote for the inexpensive Canon EF-S 10-18. Easily available for less than $300, refurbished at Canon site for $240 now and in stock.

With my Canon 7d I stick to the 24-70. When I need a wider angle I just shoot multiple pics and photo merge. That method actually captures more detail than a single wide shot... Imagine pixels/ft (or ft/pixel) in the scene that is 3 or 4+ frames wide.

Yes, great lens, but not particularly wide on a crop camera if that's what the OP is hoping for.

Yet another vote for the Canon 10.-18. Hard to beat for the price.

With the 7D MII, the OP should be looking at EF or L lenses, not EF-S lenses.

Pair a quality body with a quality lens for best results, not an entry level lens on a semi-pro body.
