His eyes were closed for some period. It just have seemed like the ball ...
Give him a USMNT tryout. We need some fire there ...
Looks like he missed the ball ... ;-)
He’s just stopping a header.
He's going in blind; should have been penalized.
"Goalie says I was going for the ball"
This is indeed a valid inference albeit the keeper should have never been questioned...
Why? No DFK can be awarded if a player charges an opponent from behind if the latter (Number 12) is OBSTRUCTING!
In this posted example the opponent (Number 12) was indeed attempting to obstruct the keeper from access to the ball... Especially considering the balls trajectory the opponent (Number 12) had virtually no chance of heading the ball before it reached the keeper.

Food for thought... The most important aspect of sports photography is KNOWING THE GAME!
This can not be over emphasized, no amount of kit, press credentials nor photographic expertise can substitute for an intimate knowledge of the sport one is engaged in photographing...
btw, this isn't my opinion, rather instead it is a widely regarded inference by all who work at the commercial level in action sports... enough said.
The same adage holds true for shooting fashion, dance or any other genre...
