I have the opportunity to purchase a Nikon ED 80-200 F/2.8 D lens in excellent condition and for a very good price.
I realize this lens is normally used on FX cameras while I only have a D500.
Does anyone else have this combination and if so, how do you like it? Any issues?

I don't have that camera but did purchase a Nikon 80-200 ED f/2.8 some years ago. The lens is fantastic.

Thanks Bob. Everything I've read indicates it's great lens. Just not sure about the combo.

One of the holy trinity of Nikon Lenses. It is money in the bank, check used prices... you may upgrade your camera but not that lens.

24-80 is more useful... that should be next :)

You said you ONLY have a D500! That speed demon will handle ANY lens you put on it.

I wasn't disparaging the camera, I just meant it wasn't full frame. I love the thing.

Holy Trinity?
I don't think so.

Sure you can use a Fx lens on a Dx body. Will not get the image size of the Fx, but the glass is excellent will perform.

The Holy Trinity, or Hebrew Trinity if you're Jared Polin, of Nikon Fx lenses:

Nikkor 14-24 mm f/2.8
Nikkor 24-70 mm f/2.8
Nikkor 70-200 mm f/2.8

I had the same lens in a d5200. It was awesome, though horribly unbalanced with such a light body. Your d500 will perform great with that, just start working out your delts now if you are shooting something fast and have to move.

Thanks for the advice. It is a heavy lens.

Most of us already knew that---even the Jared part.

I think the 80-200 2.8 would have been part of the holy trinity back before the 70-200 existed. Never heard of the term related to lenses before the current usage. I had one of the first version of it. Worked great on all the DX bodies I had.

Before there was a "Holy Trinity" there was a "Holy Trio". They were the 17-35mm F2.8, 35-70mm F2.8, and the 80-200mm F2.8. I bought them all when I got my first F4 body.

I’m guessing the 80-200 sang bass?
I've wanted but never got a Nikon F4 ever since it came out.
I can afford one now, but don't shoot film anymore.
