When I got my first DSLR camera five years ago I exclusively used Picasa I look at those pix now and I'm ashamed of myself. I don't know if Picasa has improved over time. But when I used it the quality was as good as Microsoft photo. A very good free digital processing website is Gimp. Its free and you'll get quality results. However, it is very difficult to use. So, there will be a lot for trial and error, not to mention frustration.
