I generally do not use HDR unless the dynamic range of the scene exceeds that which can be captured by the camera in one frame. Otherwise it is much easier to just process in an image editor, raising shadows, lowering highlights, etc. And in high dynamic range scenes I try to moderate the HDR look while still going a step beyond natural. Just my way of doing it.
I have both Photomatix Pro and Aurora. I like them both. The big difference in Aurora is the slider showing the original and the new, and the ability to work in layers. I'm sure there are others. This is the biggy for ME. Trey Ratcliff described Aurora as the combo of Photomatix, Lightroom and PhotoShop. It is. Some features aren't as important to me as they might be to you. I love working in HDR and some photos NEED to be overdone. Most don't. Have fun with it.
