World Cup Hopes End For US Team

The World Cup hopes for America ended yesterday after an embarrassing lost of 2-1 against Trinidad and Tobago. The US team went to the World Cup in Brazil in 2014, and did better than expected. Germany won that World Cup. Millions were spent by sponsors to support the Americans. More so than ever. Sports Analysts say that in order for America to compete greatly in International Soccer, that we have to groom our kids in the sports just as we do in Little League Baseball. Step by step. I often wonder if that will work. The 2018 World Cup will be in Russia. One thing is certain. Vladimir Putin will be there.

The World Cup hopes for America ended yesterday af... (show quote)

Yeah, I just read that on online. I think the article said it was the first time they lost the World Cup since 1986. Well, it did take two countries to defeat us - Trinidad and Tobago.

You mean that the US didn't qualify for the first time for the World Cup Finals since 1986.

You are correct. But not qualifying for this one must hurt, after doing so well in the 2014 World Cup. The team and coach were devastated over this loss. And so was I.

I photograph kids soccer during the summertime from the sidelines. 7 and 8 year olds. One mom told me, her son would one day be in a World Cup, after he finishes college. I'm sure she saw the bad news on TV. It has been on CNN and the ESPN Sports Network. America does great internationally in the Olympics, Golf, Basketball,Tennis, and Baseball. These are mostly homegrown sports that other nations play well. Soccer, we have not completely developed to it yet.

Horrible day for the USA. IT is the biggest stage and the biggest sport in the world and to miss out, is just not acceptable. The current team much weaker than in previous years. Team and Coach will be changed and that could hopefully be a good thing. We have 4+ years to think about our woes....

who cares??? watching soccer is like watching paint dry. If we lose to the LAST place team that has the population of Maine, we don't deserve to be in it anyway.

Remember when America defeated the Russians in Hockey at the 1980 Winter Olympics. They said it could never be done. Imagine, if the US won the World Cup. That would even be bigger for the US.

While every sport has its fans and its detractors, it cannot be denied that soccer opens the door to more athletes of all sizes and economic groups than any other. As youth programs continue to grow so will popularity in the U.S. Time will tell for there are no limitations to impede participation such as we see in football, tennis, skiing, swimming, basketball, . . . .

I would ask why but I really don't care, even though you look to be a good guy.

I've watched it several times, from little kids to the pros, and it just seems like a bunch of folks running around accomplishing nothing. Apparently it's just me, but I'll take a good baseball game any day. And, after last night, Go Yankees! One other thing--I think I am a good guy.

I think we can let each other enjoy our or preferred sports. It was youth soccer that brought me into the fold of football fanatics. And that made it tough to continue to like the other sports as much as I used to. After the glory days of Bench, Morgan, Rose and Perez I lost interest in baseball. Oh well.
