I found a new quantaray 70-300 tele macro. I would like to know who made them and how good they were. this is for a canon. I taken some pictures and they look good.

Pure crap house brand for Ritz/Wolf. They used to buy Nikon and Canon entry bodies only and undersell everybody by putting their Qantaray POS lenses. Crap for the non-discriminatig buyer.

PS I was not nearly harsh enough. PUREST of crap. They always broke (Jammed zooms and focus rings)

quantaray used to be Japanese. haven o idea who they are now or might have become.
I used many of their pieces back when I was starting out and they were good.
You say you have had a chance to use and you like what you get?

No one knows who ACTUALLY made Quantaray lenses, they were made by whoever had the lowest bid. A waste of money unless you get them for free, and even then seldom worth your time or effort.

Well, you found it so it cost you nothing. You say the pictures you took were good. Sounds like you have a winner or are just fooling around with the hogs. Quantaray lenses are not even second rate. They are somewhere around the bottom of the barrel. But, you found this one so free has its merits but I seriously doubt this lens can even hold a candle to the kit lenses.

I was talked into buying A Quantaray 28-200 when I got my first DSLR (D100) years ago. It's worked well
over the years. I still use it on my D7200.

I'm guessing you don't have their full line of PUREST lenses.
On the one hand, there have been thousands of cheap, crummy telephoto lenses sold over the years, but for someone who isn't really into photography and just wants long reach for short outlay, they worked fine. Not everyone can afford a $2,000 lens.

I just checked user reviews of Qantaray 70-300 lenses on Pentax Forums, there are three listed, and they are scored from "7" to "7.8". About average. Some reviews posted sample images that looked OK to good. Some reviewers mentioned Tamron and some Sigma. (Sometimes the lenses are externally rebadged, but the EXIF data reveals the true mfg.) I was given one for free, and while it works, it shows a blue cast on every photo. Cheap telephoto lenses work well for Pentax because IS in the body, not the lens. You can buy used Sigma 70-300 APO/DG without IS for less than $100, a very good lens. I don't think I could use a 300mm lens without IS or a tripod.

The Quantaray Tech 10 series (Green lettering on the lens front) were made by Sigma. There were other less expensive series available from various manufacturers.

When I bought my first DSLR in 2005, a Canon Digital Rebel, Ritz threw in a Quantaray 18-200mm lens. The lens was okay as part of an entry level setup; it focused well, never broke and took clear shots. However, when my friend bought a Nikon D7200 with an 16-85mm Nikon lens, I could see his photos were noticeably sharper than mine when I zoomed in on, say, trees in the distance. I have since gone to a D5500 with the Nikon 18-200mm lens and it's definitely superior to the Quantaray.

Quantaray is a generic name given to lenses made by an independent manufacturer. I do not know who makes them.
If you are satisfied with the quality just keep on using it.
