If you like antique cars, visit America's Car Museum in Seattle. As for beaches, just drive the coast.

There are many falls on the Oregon side of the Columbia Gorge. Take the old highway 35.
For the coast, check out Cannon Beach area for some great rock formations.
In the Seattle area, Government Locks, Pike Place Market, Gas Works Park and take the walk on ferry ride to Bainbridge Island for the view looking back at the Seattle waterfront. Enjoy!šŸ“·šŸ˜Ž

You should look at some maps. Do you want Ocean beaches, or Portland and Seattle. Neither Portland and Seattle are near Ocean beaches. How long do you plan on being in either or both areas.

Lots of great photo opportunities.... given about a month of roaming the areas from The Columbia River Gorge. Mt Hood, Mt Rainier, San Juan Islands, and MANY more. Many of us choose to live in the PNW to capture a small portion of the beauty here. What about the great Rain forests of the Olympic Peninsula. Astoria at the mouth of the Columbia River somewhat far to the West of Portland, where the Columbia dumps into the Pacific Ocean and then south to beaches.

Several multiweek trips, or a month or two of full time habitation. You're in for a surprise.!!!!! Home will never look good again, for most who travel here.

Thanks everyone for the tips. Will be gone 2 weeks, although I do like the idea of a month, but will not be able to do it this trip. We like the ocean beaches (don't know the alternative to ocean beaches) ... I need to get my ocean fix, been awhile, and the good fresh fish served i that area.

Thanks for the ideas.

In Oregon, iā€™d Suggest driving west out of Portland to Tillimook. Stop and pick up some cheese and wine and then north up to Short Sands ā€œbeachā€. Try to get there at low tide so the tide pools filled with anemones and caves with the walls covered with multi colored starfish are visible, be especially careful of the extremely slick rocks and occasional unexpected rogue wave. The north up to Canon Beach and Haystack rock and then east back to Portland for a meal in Oldtown. While in Portland, donā€™t miss the Rose gardens, and if you can find your way to Council Crest at night, the view (and photo ops) looking out over the city lights is excellent.

Then east out of Portland up the Columbia River Valley to Multnoma falls and across the (scarey) bridge to the north side to see the Salmon hatcheries. Finally, take the road (I forget the route number) to Mt. Hood and have a drink or dinner in the historic Mt. Hood lodge.

Warning - after a couple of days of that, you may want to relocate to Oregon - one of the most beautiful states in the nation.

First of all, Portland is not on the ocean...roughly 90 minutes away. If you like cityscapes, then try the view from the east side of the Willamette River (pronounced "wuh-LAM-it"). If your wildlife is satisfied by birds on the water, then the place to go is Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden. At this time of the year you should see Wood Ducks, Mallards, Wigeons, Lesser Scaups, American Coots, Buffleheads. You may also see the resident GBH or the Green Heron more rarely. You should also see some perching birds. It's helpful to have at least a 400mm lens and a tripod or monopod. If you drive to the coast, try to visit Ecola State Park. Further down 101, is Newport with the Aquarium and the Mark O Hatfield Marine Science Center. Newport also has a bay with lots of fishing boats. There are numerous water falls in the Columbia River Gorge east of Portland on I84. The Gorge is one of the most significant geologic features in the USA having been formed by the Great Flood. Allen

Pike St. Market in Seattle is a wonderful place for street photography, especially if you like taking pictures of food in stores. Lots of color. Snoqualmie Falls, to the east of Seattle is a great place for some landscapes.

In Oregon, most of the coast is great for photography, and there are some interesting lighthouses to see. Canon Beach is a good place, and if you get down to Newport, be sure to stop in at Moeā€™s for clam chowder for lunch.

Don't forget to take rain gear and warm clothes. The Oregon Coast can be cold and windy. Also, I think you can expect to have a lot of foggy mornings along the Oregon Coast. Have fun, the Oregon coast is a beautiful place.

Multnomah Falls is right along I-84 east of Portland, easy on and easy off. Of course, there's the Columbia Gorge along same highway farther east. My favorite ocean spot is Cape Perpetua south of Newport. Second is Cannon Beach. the Cape has lots of tidal pools accessible at low tide with starfish, sea urchins, etc., plus great views from high up. Cannon Beach has great rock formations off the beach, very photogenic. IMHO no such thing as too many photos of the Coast, I have boxes full from when I lived in Portland. Newport has sea lions on the docks down by the crab shops. Numerous photo ops off Hwy 101 between Cannon Beach and Florence, Oregon. Depends on just how much time you want to spend. In Portland, Washington Rose Gardens has great view of city and Mount Hood if it's clear.

I just returned from Portland. I planned to visit the water falls in the gorge, but the area was closed by the forest fires in in the area. So I drove west, In less than two hours you can reach Cannon Beach. There is wonderful state park with a number of places to shoot. I have attached one shot from beach. This is simply one of many, and I am not certain it is the best. I have not completed my editing.

We also just returned from an Oregon Coast trip. Our plans for visiting the gorge were also canceled due to the forest fires. With all the fires burning in California now I wonder if the smoke is going to spill over into the Oregon Coast.
