Niel is certainly very good at Speedlite lighting, but while I can see how the BFT can block the flash from traveling in certain directions I don't really see how it would add to the output at all.
The BFT allows you to bounce light from the camera into places you normally could not without some direct spill from the front of the speedlight.
Doesn’t add to the output.
Just helps with making that bounced light have direction, as opposed to coming from the camera.
Of course, if you have nothing to bounce off of, something else is needed.

Look at Niel Van Neikirks testing of different modifiers / reflectors. I went back to the "BFT" and saved some $$ without sacrificing results.

Thing (BFT) video here:
https://neilvn.com/tangents/about/black-foamie-thing/Again, if you are outside or in a huge building with a ceiling that's really high (or black in a few events I've shot) and no walls nearby, bouncing isn't going to work. But the Fong Dome and similar devices don't work well there either because (depending on how far away your subject is) the frontal surface area is really not that big and they are designed to bounce light off of nearby ceilings and walls to soften the light. For on-camera flash in that case, you're better off using something that makes the light bigger like the
Rogue Flash Bender or
Lite Genius.
