This woman seemed a little shy about having her picture taken. Couldn't really ask for permission since I don't speak Hebrew. This was taken in 2006, many cameras ago.

A good shot. She also seems somewhat amused.

Nice combination of market and street bar. There seems to be a lot going on. There are more long dreadlocks in Antwerp than in Tel Aviv.

The dreadlocks were all over in Israel, but more so in Jerusalem then in Tel Aviv.

That's interesting, thanks

Tel Aviv is more of a metropolitan city and Jerusalem is definitely a more 'religious' city. I was primarily in the Jewish areas of Jerusalem and to some extent Tel Aviv. I was not in any of the Moslem sections even though they are right next to each other in some places, especially in Jerusalem.

Israel is one of the places I have never managed to visit so what you have told is interesting to me. Antwerp, my adopted city, has one of the busiest harbors in Europe. Even so, the highest value single item shipped through the city is diamonds. These are marketed by the De Beers company which is operated by Jewish folk. It is normal to see the typical Jewish dress code overall but particularly in the north eastern part of the city.

Yes, it is a mainly Ultra Orthodox area. They would be the ones dressed in black and wearing various kinds of hats. If you know what you are looking for (I don’t) you can tell which sect he belongs to by his hat. This is very obvious in Jerusalem. I would love to go back, but health precludes it.

I am sorry to hear about your health problems Tikva. If anyone ever finds a cure for old age they are going to make it big time. You got me thinking that even though Jewish people are everywhere in the city, I never take pictures of them and I don't know why. Here is the only one I could find (yet another market picture I am afraid) and it is an example of what we were talking about. I don't know the secret of the dress code either. Normally I would not post this, I just could not get the color balance right, probably a jpg / sensor size problem. Yeh, a bigger sensor in a small camera would be nice.

He is definitely Orthodox, but I can't tell if he is Ultra Orthodox or not because I can't see if there are fringes hanging out below his coat, which I would expect to see in an Ultra Orthodox man. It is so convoluted that it is impossible for me to explain, I just don't know enough.

Yes, a large sensor in a small camera would make someone a bundle. I bought a D500 because of the weight not only of the camera but also of the lenses when I upgraded my camera last December. Yes, I know it would have cost a lot more money to upgrade to the D750, but it was primarily the weight. When Tamron came out with their new 18x400 mm, I bought it because of the extra length in a smaller lens. I know I am probably giving up some sharpness, but I don't plan on enlarging the photos greater than 8x10 if even that, so I went for it. I have the Nikon 18x300 mm that I bought earlier this year. I'm keeping both, at least for now. I'll have to compare the sharpness of the Tamron compared to the Nikon in the full range.

Nice capture. She doesn't seem upset, just a bit surprised.

I managed to get this shot of a fully orthodox guy yesterday, strings n'all. More or less the same place I am afraid. Any idea of the difference in the headgear between the two shots I have posted? I did try to look it up on Wiki, in section 3.3 of the link. It is a complicated read and I must admit to skipping large sections of the full article.

This gentleman is wearing a tallit katan (garment with fringes worn under clothing). Both men are wearing head coverings. The one gentleman is wearing a standard hat and this gentleman is wearing a Kippah or Yarmulke. Both men are Orthodox, but I cannot tell any more than that. I cannot tell if either is Ultra-Orthodox or not. I am not really very good at knowing the difference in all cases. It just depends. It gets very complicated. A member of the community can tell you if someone else is a member of their group or not, but to an outsider, which I am, it is not so easy. Jewish customs are very interesting and vary amongst groups.
