WE were our around Lake Mermet Refuge (Southern IL) today. Overcast but no wind. Several Blue Heron were willing to pose quietly. This guy had a fish halfway down and struggling. See the fish's tale sticking out?

WE watched for several minutes. He flew 50 yards and at that point appeared to have finished lunch.

I always wondered about that. I can just picture the parents with their kids, "Stop chewing your food."

That is his tongue you are seeing, not the tail of the fish. Nice pic, though.

OK, so i could have videoed it so you could see the fish flipping in the birds throat. Believe what you want.

I have watched herons eat turtles that were 4 or 5 inches across. No trouble swallowing. Just a few neck stretches, and "down the hatch" as the saying goes.

Their throats stay lubricated - with fish oil.
