Say I spend considerable time editing an image and I'm happy with the edits, but think I could make it a little better, then decide to take a different approach altogether and I'm happy with that second effort too. Is it possible to save an XMP file after my first effort then start over and save an XMP file for my second? I know I could save the image as a jpeg or tiff after the first and second effort, but the edits of one or the other in the XMP will be lost.
First, I will assume you are using LR and do not have PS. Second, I will suggest working from a virtual copy rather than on the original RAW file. You can make as many virtual copies as you like, and edit each one differently. It is something that a lot of photographers will do so they can have different versions and still retain the original to view.
Every time you edit a virtual copy, those changes are saved in the .xmp sidecar. If you export the image with edits, you can choose a format such as .tiff or .jpg. Advantage to exporting is that your edited version is then visible in the folder on your hard drive as well as in LR. AND you can then delete the .xmp sidecar [unless you want to retain the editing history]! I do not like having those "blank pages" filling up my HD folder.
