Adapting Nikon F Lenses to a Sony E Mount Camera

I have a bundle--I would call eight lenses "a bundle"--of Nikon lenses, some from my film days, some from my D800E days, that I'd like to be able to use with my Sony A6000. I just went online to find an adapter and ran into a wall. The most promising adapter I saw was the FotodioX FUSION Smart AF Adapter for Nikon F Lens to Sony E-Mount Camera, but there seem to have been issues with it that have the manufacturer posting warnings rather than trying to sell the piece. It seems that many of the adapters won't play with my autofocus, VR lenses, and there's little said about the older lenses.

So here's my question: Is there anyone out there who has found and used an adapter that will adapt both the Nikon lenses of today (2010-2017) and the lenses of yesterday (1970-80) to a Sony E mount camera?

Yes, I have a large selection of Nikon and Nikon mount lenses that I have adapted to Sony E mount camera. It is probably around 30 Nikon mount lenses I have and the camera I am using is Sony A7r.

When you decide which adapter to buy there are 3 options.

1. One is to buy adapter that will let the camera do the focusing, in other words, the autofocus works with the adapter used. I have never tried one of those.

2. Second is to buy the cheapest adapter available. They will work fine in every way except for autofocus and they will not work properly with G lenses. That meaning they will not adjust the aperture of the lens when you fire off. For older lenses it does not matter as you will set the aperture manually by turning the aperture ring on the lens. I have one of those that I bought from Ebay and it works great. Got it for around $10. In combination with this adapter I use focus magnifyer and focus peaking. Have programmed one button for it so at the press of the button I get magnified view of the subject in the viewfinder and then it is as easy as on a film camera with a split screen to focus accurately. Works very well in my opinion.

3. Third is to buy adapter that has aperture control ring. With that ring you can adjust the aperture on the G lenses manually but you will not know accurately what aperture you are using. It goes from wide open to smallest aperture without any marks indicating the aperture you are using. I also have one of those and perfectly happy with it. Got it for around $20 I use the same method to focus accurately with this adapter.

And for your information, I have no native lenses for my Sony A7r. Only using adapted lenses on it and never using any autofocus. The focus peaking and focus magnifier on those Sony cameras is simply that good and easy to use that autofocus is never needed for the tourist and landscape and wildlife photos. Of course when I shoot action like sports and BIF I am not using this camera but something with good autofocus.

This is a sample of the cheapest version of adapter that works well for Nikon lenses with aperture ring. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Camera-Adapter-Ring-for-Nikon-AI-Lens-to-Sony-NEX-E-NEX-3-NEX-5-6-7-5n-AI-NEX-/112152117406?hash=item1a1cc9809e:g:9PUAAOSwb3NZt8kY

And here is a sample of adapter with aperture control to use with G lenses. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Adapter-for-Nikon-G-Lens-to-Sony-E-Mount-NEX5-NEX-5-NEX3-VG10-Camera-K-F-Concept-/162510481171?hash=item25d6612713:g:gpoAAOSwOTVZm5fh

I would just buy one of those and forget about adapter with autofocus and metering. They seem to be worse than nothing as there are reports about cameras damaged after using such adapters.

Although I usually look for a good economical way to get the job done, I like the job to be done completely. If I were to get a Nikon adapter for my A6000, I would want the lenses to work as well on the Sony as they do on the Nikon. If I'm saving the expense of several lenses, I would gladly pay a little more for an automatic adapter.

The Metabones is automatic, but for $20 less, it doesn't look like the Fotodiox is. "De-Clicked Aperture Control Ring" ???

I get your point but since the guy asking for advice has lenses from his film days, probably some that have never autofocused before it makes little sence trying to adapt them with autofocus adapter now ;) So for those lenses he will go all the way with the cheapest available adapter. But for the autofocus lenses he should rather save his money for a Nikon mirrorless camera that is expected soon. Those autofocus adapters are expensive.

I use a Fotodiox adapter with two old Nikon lenses. But it is the plain, non-electric $40 version. Only works in manual. I have an old Nikon 400mm and a Rokinon 8mm fisheye. It works well with both. I do have an LA-EA3 which adapts A-mount lenses, but not Nikon. I've used both with a6000 and a6300.

Manual focus, manual aperture lenses... all you need is a simple adapter.

https://www.ebay.com/sch/Lens-Adapters-Mounts-Tubes/30059/i.html?_from=R40&_sop=15&_nkw=adapter%20nikon%20f%20to%20sony&_dcat=30059&Camera%252FCamcorder%2520Fitting=Sony%2520E&rt=nc&_trksid=p2045573.m1684

If you're trying to adapt autofocus lenses (especially those without an aperture control ring) and want the AF to work, it's a much bigger deal.

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?setIPP=48&ci=3420&fct=fct_camera-fitting-male_1595%7csony-e-mount-aps-c-cameras%2bfct_lens-fitting-female_1596%7cnikon%2bfct_camera-fitting-male_1595%7csony-e-mount-full-frame-cameras&srtclk=itemspp&ipp=48&N=4077634486&

I can't recommend anything specific, because I don't use Sony gear. (I use Canon, which similarly can use a lot of adapted lenses.)

Thank you all for your suggestions. I'm still unsure which adapter I'm going to go with, but I can now make an informed purchase. Sometimes, informed is all you can hope for.

Thanks again.
