Unable to Download 5DM4 images to iPhone 7 via Apple's USB 3 cable

Has anyone successfully used the Apple USB 3 to Lightning Camera Adaptor to download images from a Canon 5D Mark4 to an iPhone 7 Plus? I have contacted Apple Support and Canon Support. Everyone says it should be possible, but I have not been able to do it. Apple Support has verified my phone settings and Canon Support my camera settings.

I have the latest s/w in the camera (firmware version 1.0.4) and on the phone (version 11.0.2, 15A421). I have disabled the camera WiFi and the AutoPower Off function.

I have tried it with and without the added Lightning power cable plugged into the wall socket.

When I connect the 5DM4 via its USB 3 cable to the Apple Adaptor and turn the camera on, the photo app on the iPhone opens to the import page and I select Import All on the phone. Note that at this point no images appear, but a light grey outline box does show on the phone and the size of the box is in proportion to the number of images on the SD card. , The camera access lamp blinks briefly (seemingly in proportion to the number of files on the SD card) and then nothing happens. It does not seem to matter what type of files are on the card (CR2 only, JPEG only, CR2 + JPEG) nor how many files there are. I have allowed it to work for several hours in some cases. I have tried two different SD HC cards (32GB and 256GB).
I have verified on the camera and via Lightroom that the camera does contain the files I am expecting.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Try taking only one or two pictures, then see if you can import them. If so you may have to limit the number you try to import.

It works on a 5D3 to an ipad, but haven’t tried it on a 5D4 or my iPhone.

Are the photos RAW? If so could that be creating an issue?

My question why? Put them in someplace like dropbox, Flickr, etc and just use the phone interface. Why chew up your phone space?

There was a similar discussion on this subject a few weeks ago. I believe the problem was a software compatability issue interfacing with the phone, but it was a reverse application. They were trying to get shots from a phone onto a camera SD card.

In that discussion, the same question was asked. Why?

Why was the OP trying to get images onto a device with a small screen?

In this case, the phone is portable and usually handy to show off the shots. But it's still a small screen.

Apple makes horrible cables. You can get Anker cables from Amazon. They have worked for me when apple has failed.

Thank you for the input.

In fact I have tried many combinations of file types and quantities and none were successful. A single RAW image, a single JPEG image, multiple RAW's, multiple JPEG's and pairs of multiple RAW's and JPEG's; everything produced the same result with the exception of the length of time the access light blinked. More images produced more blinks. But ultimately no files were ever transferred to the iPhone.

I do appreciate your taking the time to respond.

Thank you. Prior to buying the Apple cable I searched the internet for related topics and had found several instances of people saying what you said about the ipad. I could never find a reference to an iPhone. So I called Apple Support and asked about the iPhone and was told that it would work. In face I also called the local Apple store and spoke to the folks at the Genius bar; all agreed that it would work. That is one of the reasons I think it is some silly mistake I am making.

I appreciate your talking time to contribute to this discussion. Perhaps I should have been more careful in my original post. CR2 is the Canon RAW format. Thus I have not been successful and it does not depend on whether the files to be transferred are RAW or JPEG or any combination.

This is off-topic, but the answer is that I have an iPhone with about 256GB of unused memory and I was hoping for a simple way to back up my images while on travel. A way that would use the minimum amount of extra things I needed to carry and which would not depend on a (sometimes) unreliable hotel WiFi.

I have used DropBox and I have used my Western Digital My Passport Wireless with the built-in SD card reader.

I wanted a simpler solution.

I am aware of a previous discussion that may be the one you refer to in your reply. I had already come across an Apple publication in which they stated that the cable I was interested in using (model A1619, the USB 3 cable) could NOT be used for reverse transfer. Fortunately I was not interested in a reverse transfer.

To understand my motivation for attempting to do this in the first place, please refer to my reply above.

I appreciate your suggestion. The general impression I have from my internet research is that the majority of the people posting in various places believe that the Apple cables work better, but I never discount experience. If it did not work for you and the Anker cable did work then bravo for finding a solution. Maybe I need to try your approach to resolve this. It is very frustrating because I am unsuccessful and I cannot find anyone who has actually done hat I would like to do. I knew going into this that there would be few proofs via the existence theorem. My circumstance with an iPhone that has about 256GB of free memory available for use is not typical.

Thanks.
