I am thinking about getting a new lens for my nikon d5300. Does anyone know about the Opteka 650-1300mm (1300-2600mm) Telephoto Lens? Are there better ones to consider? Any pros and cons would be extremely helpful. Thanks!

Mary

If you want a good tele, look hdere.

It has been manufactured under many names. This lens will give you reach, but most of these lenses become paper weights as most photographer become dissatisfied with the results over time. I know the Nikon 200-500 costs more but after buying it not only will your images be better you will end up using it and not discarding it. I have used this lens since it's release and it has held up fine and gives me great sharpness. So sharp and light that I have sold my prime 300 2.8 and my 200-400 4 in favor of this lens.

Stick with Nikon lens if financially possible. A 50mm 1.8g prime and a 35mm 1.8g prime lens, or even a 85mm 1.8g. these are good lens, and hopefully you will afford them.

Last I looked even the 85mm didn’t count as a super-telephoto. This recommendation makes no sense in the context of this discussion.

Mary, it seems to me that you are after a tele-zoom. Perhaps you want to use it for bird photography?
I am not familiar with Opteka but very familiar with the 150-600 made by Tamron and Sigma, both of very good optical quality.
I guess you meant as digital factors 975-1950 which will be the result of multiplying 650-1300 X 1.5.

The Nikkor (Nikon) 200-500 mm lens is better than either the Sigma or Tamron (IMHO), and costs less...go with the Nikkor.

Mary,
I have this same lens with the Rokinon name on it.
It does not have an adjustable aperture.
It is not a premium lens either. But with careful manual focus on a decent tripod on real distant subjects does quite well. I was surprised at the detail of a Russian Orthodox church I shot clear across a large valley.
For pixel peepers nothing is better than their favorite lens and all else is a waste of money.
I don't recommend this as your first long zoom as there are better ones by Nikon that are relatively cheap that have AF and IS that you would appreciate. Also Tamron, Toki and Sigma make Excellent lenses for your camera in the long range with AF and IS.

1400 isn't that much less comparing to 750 IMO, but I may be wrong...

In the long zoom range, yes, there is a better lens to consider. How much does your husband love you?

Mary that lens is more of a novelty lens than any sort of serious optical device. Its extremely slow (F8 at 650mm) and being manual focus only is extremely difficult to focus with your penta mirror viewfinder. Its a bit easier to focus using live view but if there is enough light to use it your live view screen will be hard to see.
I suggest saving your money for a better lens rather than waste it on a toy lens like the Opteka.

I have a Korean-built {comes under several names} mirror 500mm lens. You will also hear negative things about it here, and in truth it is not as good as a $$$$ lens, but it gives credible images for much much less.

Don’t let us spend your money. It’s your money, so figure out your goals, and spend consistently with them.

It's over a foot long and weighs more than 4lbs. Best have a heavy duty tripod & Gimbal to balance it. It's also manual focus only.

I have had the Sigma 150-600 contemporary for about 2 years and it is great. I use it with a monopod which makes it quite easy to use. I have the 2.0 teleconverter and as stated before, autofocus just doesnt work with this but put it all together on a good trypod and manual focus, you can get a crystal clear 1200mm shot of the moon or anything else in a very narrow field.
