I have been photographing wildlife with a Nikkor 80-400 lens on my Nikon 7100. I have read a number of reviews of the second generation Tamron 150-600, the G2, and I am considering purchasing that lens. What have been actual experiences - good or bad - of "Hogs" with that lens? Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

I have the Tamron 18-400 and like it. I sold my 80-400 newer version Nikon and bought the Nikon 200-500. Likes both lenses and kind of wish I had kept the 80-400. I’ve never used the Tamron 160-600 but have seen YouTube’s. It looks good and I like how you can use the Tamron “Tap-In”. Wish Nikon offered something like that.

I just picked up a 150-600 G2 Tamron and have only had time for a dozen test shots. Camera is a D750 set on auto - no flash. JPG's no PP or crops. So far I am very pleased. First is a a painting of a fish about 10x12 inches painted on reclaimed crab pot wood from about 12 feet with no flash or other light except a east facing window late in the afternoon so the window was in a shadow from the roof. Not much light. Navigation chart behind the fish is faint. Exposure 600mm 1/30 f/6.3 ISO 6400 on a tripod. Second shot is my Minpin. Better light outside late afternoon with a little sun. 150mm 1/500 f/5.6 ISO 400 handheld VC on. I'm sure in good light stopped down a couple stops it will be sharper. She is kind of heavy so I will try it on a gimbal head. The focus was fast in brighter light. VC seemed to work well. I'll post more test shots.

Notice the little purple stitch on her nose below the eye where she had a cyst removed.

I was wondering why you wish you had kept the 80-400mm. Was it better than the 200-500mm?

I have the 150-600mm Tamron and have used it with a gimbal and hand held. I really think it is it is a fantastic lens. It is a little heavy but even when I shot hand held the results were excellent. Here are some hand held shots.

Just once I would like someone to read the person's question and answer it as asked. As he had asked for people who had either experience with owned or used the Tamron 150 to 600 G2 which in your own statement you have not.

I know a couple people that sold there Tamron 160-600 to buy the Nikokn 200-500 and that is one of the reason I bought the Nikon. Ya some pretty dumb people on this site who can't read and answer a question...

I have the Tamron 150-600 G2 and absolutely love it. Before I bought it, I rented it for a week, as I also did with the Sigma 150-600 Sport and the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary. Here's why I chose the Tamron: http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-458752-1.html

Tamron is coming to my local camera store next Saturday for a lens show and lecture. We are to bring our cameras. I plan to test a wide angle lens but also the 150-600. Seeing i like my 18-400 I'm sure it's a good lens. Also because I own the 200-500 I'll not be purchasing the 150-600 but that little extra reach might be a good thing and slightly wider does not hurt.

I've been using one for about 6 months and love it, I sold my Nikor 200-500 after using the G2.

Yes, I’m have the lense and used it extensively in June in Tanzania both handheld and resting on heavy beanbags on our bush vehicle. I love it.
