First of all, thank you to everyone who took the time to read my dissertation about what I believe to be a very good tool for amateur photographers, and those learning what PP can do to their shots. It's very obvious that Picasa has a far wider fan base than I'd imagined, and your support and endorsement for what I wrote is very much appreciated.
No, I am not an employee of Google or Picasa; I wish I were, but I don't quite fit their employee demographic. Think them; young, hip, thin, brilliant, rich. Think me; old, decidedly un-hip, so not thin, semi-smart, and rich in experience only.
That's what I like about this forum; it really is like a family get together at times. Reading the six or so pages of postings and pictures, it's like being in a living room, chatting with folks who simply want to learn and know more about photography. If Picasa is one of the tools, fine. If folks like it for editing, or simply backing up their shots into the cloud, fine.
It's like being in a grocery store; you don't have to buy everything, only what you want. You don't have to use all of Picasa, or let it run your post-processing life; you can select things you like and don't like, and move on to whatever else you use.

Again, thanks to everyone who participated in this discussion. It's great to be in a community of like-minded folks.

I still use the basic Picnik option within my Picasa 3. Does anyone else still use the imbedded Picnik?

Piknik was disappeared from Picasa a little while ago. You now hit a button called "Edit in Creative Kit" that seems to do a few of the things Piknik did. It looks as though it uploads your selected shot to somewhere, grinds gears, and then allows you to do stuff to your shot. I don't know what caused Google/Picasa and Piknik to part ways, but it seems as though there are parts of Piknik still usable in Picasa.

Nikonian72, I don't know if it's imbedded. Current Picasa is build 3.9.0. If your Picasa3 is still calling it Piknik, I would think that if you update, Piknik may go away. Don't know for sure, but nothing on my Picasa now says Piknik.

I do know that it is still part of Picasa 3, version 3.9.0 . I use it every day.

http://support.google.com/picnik/

"Since joining Google in 2010, the Picnik team has been working on Picnik while helping to create photo editing magic in Google’s products. But now we get to focus. Picnik closed its doors on April 19, 2012."

I too am like Nikonian72, I use Picasa everyday for the quick fix.my only complaint is when sending images Picasa seems to downsize the file too much. I am not sure if that is adjustable..I do like the new effects in the latest upgrade of Picasa particularly the HDR ish feature. All,of this said I must admit that I have been holding off until I migrate from P C to Mac and then I will most likely go LR or App. But until then Picasa has served me well, except for that file size scale down..

@Effjayess

You can, indeed, alter the resolution of emailed imaged. Just go to Tools/Options Email tab and adjust the slider to suit your needs.

In the days before ubiquitous broadband, Picasa was a godsend for people who needed to email from / to dialup connections. For the Mrs & I it is still invaluable when we're sending proofs to our editor (we both frequently provide images for a specialist magazine here in the UK).

For those quick and dirty edits, Picasa is our tool of choice. For image MANIPULATION (rather than enhancement) we turn to PhotoShop.

I updated Picasa 3 yesterday. Mine no longer has picnic. It is now called "Edit in creative kit". It has the same icon as picnic. I have used Picasa all the time but never used this feature until now. I'm attaching a before and after image I just processed in "Edit in creative kit". It's a fun feature that I'll play around with more in the future.

Before

After "Edit in creative kit"

That's what my Picasa looks like. I am a little ashamed to admit I use it in this forum. It does a very good job. I try to only use Picnik when it is really necessary. I tend to over do it sometimes in Picnik. I like Picasa because it opens raw photos too.

These are my rest subjects. Before comments I know there is noise in it. working on it.

After Picasa edit I drag it out to desktop & retain original size. I can e-mail up to 10 meg with Comcast. Yes If you use Picasa to e-mail it really reduces size
