Just curious, is the Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX ED VR II Lens (72mm) considered a kit lense?
I am using this on my D3100 almost exclusively.

Thanks, Steve

I don't think so. Mostly the Nikon AF‑S Nikkor 18‑55mm 1 3.5‑5.6 is the most common product associated with Kit Lens with Nikon. There are retailers who will bundle a Nikon body with the 18 - 55 and the 18 - 200.

It was a kit lens for the D200 (first version) and I believe for the D300. It's a decent lens, especially when you consider the zoom range. I got mine when I bought a D200 in 2006.

Thanks, I appreciate the info. I see many references to 18-300 so wasn't sure how good this lens is. I visit all the zoos I can, and love carrying just one lens.

I got mine used at a photo store in Kansas City that had been in business for 40+ years. Sadly they closed in January and my source for all things photo disappeared. So glad to have found UHH.

Yes. I got it with my D300 as a Nikon bundle in one box. It is the original VR version.

I have the Canon version of the 18-200, use it as my walk around. Got is as a "kit" with my 7D. It ain't perfect (lens creep) but it's pretty good. Most of the problems are my fault not the lens

I use my 18-200 all the time. A rubber band around the body takes care of lens creep. Use a nice thick one, the kind that have advertising on them.

As far as I know Nikon has never made that lens a KIT LENS, and not all kit lenses are bad, Nikon has made the 24-120 a kit lens for years and that lens is a very good one.
I own and use the 18-200 on trips and pair it with the Nikon 10-24, makes a great combination. The 18-200 is one of the sharpest Nikon zooms out there, Nikon still offers it and it is still one of their top sellers. NO, I would not consider the 18-200 a kit lens.

I just traded in that lens to Adorama. Bought the Tamron 18-400. My forest none Nikon lens. Wanted more reach. Very well made and happy with the results.

The Nikon was/is a good lens and you will be happy with it.

Thanks so much to all. I have the 18-55 that came with the camera as my other lens, so nothing to compare the longer zoom to. I have been happy with the zoom and thought the quality was good. Just wanted to be sure.

It is like stereos. You can be happy with the sound of your boom box until you hear a full fledged audio system.

Now the Nikon 200-500 is another story. Great lens for sports and birding. Use it with the D500.

This is a great lense. I paired this with my 7000 as well as a 16-85, both exceptional lenses. I've been shooting, originally film, always Nikon since the 60's and moved over to digital a few years back. You will not go wrong with either of these lenses, enjoy, Anthony

Weight is an issue for me so I take only one lens. The 18-200, I think, is excellent. The range and the results are most pleasing. Yes, use rubber band for creep. Sometimes I will bring the 12-24 which I also love. I too am thinking of the 18-300, but want to reserch it and try to find out if it is as good as the 18-200 with just more range. Nikon lenses are in general fantastic.
