Thanks!

Summer 2016 we did something similar.

We stayed at a hotel in Montreal’s Chinatown, which is within walking distance of Old Montreal - that entire area is a photo location.

We also stayed at a hotel on Grande-Allee just outside Old Quebec - again, that entire area, including Plain of Abraham, is a photo location.

If I were you, I’d mostly skip places along the route in the U.S. - you can always go to them on another trip, but I can’t imagine spending too much time in Quebec province.

Added : the government stuff in Ottawa is worth a day, even though we stopped for just a few hours enroute between Montreal and Toronto.

Drive through the Adirondack Park (biggest park East of the Mississippi River). Here how to go: EAST on US Rt.90 to Utica, New York. Get on N.Y. Rt. 12 going North At Alder Creek , get on N.Y. 28 North At Blue Mountain Lake get on N.Y. Rt.30 North. At Tupper Lake N.Y. Rt.3 North. N.Y. Rt.3 will bring you out at Plattsburgh, N.Y. At Plattsburgh get on US RT. 86 . Montreal is one hour drive North of Plattsburgh. I known I giving you bare bones map through Adirondack Park. You will be going through Adirondack Park at the best time of the year. How I known all is because I live in a small town North of the Adirondack. Enjoy your trip.

Ditto. The autumn leaves are spectacular, every direction you point your camera is a photo op.

That little tour brings back memories. My family spent 3 weeks every August at Lake George and we have visited all these places and more.

OP, enjoy the trip. I hope the foliage has turned or still holding for your trip.
Be sure to get REAL maple syrup and some of the best cheddar cheese ever made.
The Quebecois enjoy a good Bon Jour from Americans.

Old Montreal and Old Quebec City and backroads between the 2 cities. You will be in tourist areas and most Quebecois speak at least some English. If you know any French, use it. It is appreciated. Almost always, though, they will answer you in English (especially if they see that you are struggling).

"Looking for photo locations "

I love Old Quebec for photography. Been there 3 times.
Just a note, ALL road signs in Quebec is in French. We had a few unplanned side trips due to that over the years :)
Have a good trip!

Don't correct them, that's my job.

More on topic. I recently made the trip from Houston to Ottawa and back. I drove through Ohio from Cincinnati through Columbus and out through Erie, Pennsylvania and then Rochester, NY. At Syracuse, NY, I took a hard left going due North on 81 and crossed over into Canada at the Thousand Island river crossing. From then on, I got on the 401 and that's a straight shot to Montreal. (Ottawa was an exit way before Montreal.)

Avoid Niagara for one main reason; Metropolitan Toronto. The traffic is horrendous and it's ugly. On the other hand crossing at the Thousand Island bridge will be memorable and camera-worthy.

Everyone has told you about Old Montreal and all, and that's great. However, if you really want memorable pictures, I suggest you make your way up Mount Royal in the center of the city. There are at least two places where you can park you car and go enjoy the scenery. On the south east side, you can see the entire downtown and the Saint Lawrence river in the distance, with the various bridges and mountains in the far distance. You can fill a 128GB SD card with pictures. Then there is another place which faces more north and east and you can see the Olympic Stadium and much more. There is little to no walking involved here, bring your equipment and have a great time. I'll see if I can scrounge up some pictures of that.

You will be crossing one of those bridges on your way to Quebec City.

In Quebec, the Plains of Abraham have already been mentioned, you may want to check out the Chateau Frontenac. Last time I was there was 1961, I think. At the Chateau, not Quebec.

If you go to the Plains of Abraham, do not be surprised that they are not flat as the name implies. In French, they are called Pleines d'Abraham which translates to Fields of Abraham (the name of the farmer where the battle was fought).

Sigh. No, they are not called the "fulls of Abraham," they are called "les plaines d'Abraham." In French, plaine is plain and pleine is full.
