The photographer takes the picture, not the camera.

Here is a post that should trigger 10 pages of responses. I would like to assert that GAS, to some level, is appropriate. I have read numerous articles from pros who reflect on their career and warn against GAS....and as you peer into their bag, you find a 5D body, the holy trinity at 2.8, 3 sharp L primes and the odd Zeiss lens....as well as bags, modifiers, monolights etc.

...mm hmm...methinks thou dost protest too much

If they were so repentant...then why not sell the gear. Never saw ANY of these "pro's" shooting with a rebel, a 18-200 kit lens (covering the trinity/primes) range and some bare incandescent bulbs with some tinfoil reflectors....composition and vision still trumps...I will be the first to admit that...however

My experience in my short but intense journey from my first ever camera 70D 4+ yrs ago..to getting hooked on photography is that GEAR MATTERS....the difference between a kit lens and Zeiss is absolutely magical and can only be discerned by the viewer in the moment of "je ne sais quois". (Not DXOMark scores).... but that moment does exist.

(DISCLAIMER: GAS that drives you from Nikon to Canon to Fuji Mirrorless in my mind is real GAS but getting an 85mm 1.4 to replace your 18-200 is not GAS it is the acknowledgement of the magical art of photography.)

Now....let the Ansel Adams advocates of a box with a pinhole, SOOC, no post processing folks weigh in and let the discussion ensue... :-)

Very nice post. Enjoyed it. But if you look into my bag you will find newer manual focus Zeiss T* lenses that contain a chip for metering and focusing on my D500 and D810. Yes, and it was GAS that drove me to it, that and a great price on ebay for mint in the box, I now have the 18, 28, 50 and 100 macro's. I am currently looking for the 21. Man are the colors unbelievable on these lenses. Why did I wait so long for GAS to over take me?

Let me give you my take on this. GAS becomes the natural and logical wish of a photographer that needs more gear to improve on his or her photography. Notice I said "to improve" on his or her photography. To improve our photography is different than being lured by advertisements or the desire to buy.
Yes, you are absolutely right, a professional lens will always be superior to a kit lens but consider that the kit lens will do miracles in the hands of the experienced photographer while that beautiful Zeiss lens will be totally useless in the hands of the inexperienced.
In regard to the gear that professionals use consider that many of them work with gear that does not belong to them. If you look into the camera bag of someone like Steve McCurry you could be disappointed since this is a photojournalist that carries (or used to carry) a minimal amount of gear for his assignments. Two or three lenses were enough for him and he always came back with outstanding photographs.
Consider that a 18-200 zoom is a general, convenient walk around lens. If the photographer is shooting portraits the 85mm f1.4 is a better choice and I see no GAS here just a logical choice.
I have an Olympus EPL-1 that I usually carry as a back up and a Pen EP-5. I just bought the Olympus EM-10 Mk. II not blaming GAS in the process, I simply need many of the features in the new camera to improve on my photographic style.
Going from one brand to others could be considered GAS if acting erratically. Buying a new camera because the old camera lacks features needed is a necessity.

Difference between GAS and buying to use. If you buy it just to have it and do not kno it’s application what good is it other than as a bragging point.

Nicely put: "Sure you can get great pictures with a cheap camera, but you can get better pictures under worse conditions with a better camera."

Most people on UHH like the gear as much as they like photography. At least that describes me. Never apologize, except maybe to your better half, for buying new photo gear.

Wrong. Google just came out with a body cam that takes pictures it deems noteworthy.

As far as I am concerned GAS is the business of the person experiencing it and no one else. Their money, their desires, their business. Answering questions about a piece of gear a member is considering is one of the reasons why the Hog is here, but many members seem to feel that it is their duty to discourage anyone from buying anything, particularly if they don't have it themselves it seems.

Well said! Sometimes the green eyed monster has its way with people. And there's nothing worse than a know it all pontificating and pooh poohing someone else's choices.

With Beano--There'll Be No GAS... Sorry, someone had to say it. In my day we called it "Retail Therapy". Nice to know modern terminology is catching up. Those who ride Harley's usually say, "It's not the destination... It's the ride." I say that if you're not having fun doing something, you should be doing something else. Now that I'm retired, this saying comes into reality. If using a particular camera system will make shooting pictures more enjoyable, why not? (providing you have the money) There's something horribly right with creating beauty and memories to share with others. A person's attitude towards photography speaks more about the quality of their work rather than the equipment they use. Since returning to the art form, I can take time to sit down and look back at my pictures to relive the great moments of my life. What I like most about digital is that when you look at pictures on a device, there's light to go with the image. I'm enjoying leaning about the equipment and how to better use it for better pictures. I love t when I capture a shot I can look at time and time again with pleasure and the good feeling to know that I took it.

And if none of this makes any sense, I really dig having a really cool looking camera (low on the list)... So for me, GAS doesn't mean Gear Acquisition Syndrome, it stands more for Got Another Shot...or Going Around Shooting... or even Great Acquired Shot...
