If NO 35mm lens is capable of resolving greater than 20MP, why do we now have 30, 40, even 50mp Full Frame cameras? ... What's the point? ...

“NO 35mm lens is capable of resolving greater than 20MP”
Where did you get that information? Thanks.

Chris, you have a knack for quoting “facts” without being able to support them with references to such things as camera weight or identification on “knowledgeable contributors.” This is not a sign of lack of knowledge; it is, however an indication of a tendency to rely heavily on here say. It might be a good idea to occasionally question the authenticity of what you read.

It wasn't hearsay, Bill ... this gentleman offered a fairly well-done treatise on resolution. Since he has also provided me a wealth of known-to-be accurate information on other topics, I saw no need to question his knowledge on this statement.
Incidentally, Bill ... in the thread on FF camera weights being double that of APS-C ... I was quite wrong. It turns out the D5 - is TRIPLE the weight of most APS-C cameras ... at 3.1lbs ... pardon my goof!!!!

OK, Chris; no argument. Could you please provide this gentleman’s user name so I can read the information?

Bill ... sorry for the delay in response - but I was just looking at the posts from early yesterday morning ... trying to find the exact one ... but I had to wade thru so much garbage from the harassers ... it got me too down to continue ...
I'll just have to guess ... and leave it up to you to look it up ...
I suspect it was probably JPL ... but, it might also have been Alan Myers, at Amfoto ...
Whichever ... I enjoy both of their responses, always, as they are always so all-encompassing ... hope you find it, Bill ...

I think it has to do with the age of the lens I am still searching for a up to date article from the lens manufacturers my bet is that these newer lens models are being built to closely match with the new sensors.
Most everything that I have read is for older film lenses on our newer DSLR's. Maybe this is why some lenses are soft and the newer versions seem to be sharper all around, film lenses did not have megapixels to deal with so they were built to specs that matched the needs of film, now the game is changing and newer lenses made not just for Full frame DSLR's, aps c cameras such as The D7100, Canon t whichever model number and micro 4/3's cameras all are having lenses designed specifically for the different formats with that sort of match hopefully the lens resolution meets or will meet the sensor resolution. No matter where its at right now it is nice to have sensor resolution higher so that when a technological advancement with lenses happens they will be able to incorporate it with today's sensors seamlessly.

Ah, so that's it! ... Terry, let me ask you something ... BHC just asked me where I got this stuff about lenses only resolving 20mp ... was it, in fact - YOU - who shared that with me?

No I think it was one of the folks you mentioned, I am not that knowledgeable on the subject I just goggled a bunch of the articles and came to the conclusion that much of the articles are older by a couple years it is an interesting subject though it never occurred to me until you brought it up, and I am bored to death here in the hospital I was heading out to go shoot a couple local petroglyph sites and took a bad fall in my driveway, threw my hip implant out of wack they may have to do a corrective surgery or a replacement the metal went bad 6 months after they put it in back in 2007 have been doging the surgery but may have to have it done now will know more around thursday they are telling me, it;s hell to get old and have a body that's falling apart.

Do you remember if it was JPL or Alan Meyers?
Sorry about your physical situation, Terry ... here I thought you were 44, but I guess that means you were born, then ... which would make you just three years older than me ... did I get that right? ... I just turned 70 ... and, yes, it is hell getting old ... nothing quite works the way it used to, does it? ... You can't move so much, anymore ... and when you do - it takes you three times as long to recuperate ... I know what that's like ... the doc's telling me I may need surgery, too ... fear that ... really!

pretty sure it was jpl, but without looking through all your replys not positive, was born in 1952 65 years old as of last friday. I have had far to many surgeries in my life, shot twice one blew my ankle to pieces the other tooh a chunk out of my elbow, then a car wreck broke the metal loose from the repaired ankle took the pieces out with what amounted to a shop vac now my entire right foot is only held in place by metal I have no ankle or any bone until 7 inches from my knee. It's all good though I am still on this earth and kicking at every moment I can.
well its almost 12:30 am and the nurse came in and has me getting ready to get my night night shot after more blood test I swear these VA folks are vampires. Talk at you tomorrow.

Well, if you can’t point me to the source, I’ll have to assume that it is too difficult for someone with my limited intellect to find. So, Ill just have to conclude that you either misread the data or are not really sure of its existence.

It depends on the format and lens, but the short answer for 35mm is yes it is possible.
For the long answer
