We're going on a Rocky Mountaineer train tour of the Canadian Rockies next week. It'll be my first time in Canada. We visit Vancouver, Kamloops, Lake Louise, Jasper, Banff etc. We'll be spending a couple of days in Vancouver before embarking on the train. I'm looking for suggestions for things to see and photograph in and around Vancouver. We're only there a couple of days and will need to take taxi or public transit. Maybe a rental car if there's something we just can't miss.

Vancouver harbour from Stanley Park, Stanley Park, Vancouver itself (Cityscapes with the snow capped mountains in the background can be fantastic in the right light). Capilano suspension bridge and park. Try this link for many more ideas which may appeal to your interests.

That sounds like a great trip. Other people have done that and posted pictures. Hopefully, they'll respond.

If you go to Stanley Park, try the aquarium. There is a display of jellyfish that is incredible. Also, if time permits, go to Butchart Gardens. This trip will be an all day deal as a ferry ride is required. Enjoy this beautiful trip. Will you be in the dome car on the Mountaineer?

A short ferry ride from Vancouver will take you to Victoria. The harbor area is enjoyable and in good weather the street entertainment there at night is worth seeing. But when there, Bouchart Gardens is a must-see.

I took a similar tour some years ago in the opposite direction and I have two regrets. The first was that the firmware in my camera got corrupted, rendering my camera useless - a problem I've never had again or even heard of someone having so you probably don't have to worry about that. But my second regret was that I'd not scheduled enough time in Jasper and Banff. There is a lot there to see so allow yourself as much time as you can. It really offers a lot of majestic scenery.

In addition to the above recommendations which are all wonderful, I would visit Granville island in Vancouver. You can either drive over to the island or take a water taxi from the city. Granville island has a wonderful public market as well as some nice restaurants. You will also have a beautiful view of the city from the island.

That is a great trip. You will love the train ride. Keep your eyes peeled for interesting shots out the windows. Butchart Gardens in Victoria is a must if you love flowers. You an spend all day there, but have extra batteries and plenty of memory cards. You can fill up an SD card in the rose garden alone.

I would recommend a haze filter for mountain pictures.

Once you've been there you are going to wish you had more than the 2 days. Hint: Go back and spend a week at later time.

What I like to do when I travel is to get a local Cab Driver to take me around to see the regular bus tour sites and then the things he knows about that are out of the way and not visited by many tourists. I have always had great photo ops when I do this.

I realize you asked specifically about locations in the Vancouver area but if you are going to be in Alberta I would suggest renting a car and driving the Icefields Parkway which begins north of Banff and ends just south of Jasper. I live in the Rockies and have photographed in all the major mountain ranges in the western US and the Alberta Rockies as seen from the Icefields Parkway are the most beautiful mountain scenery I've ever seen, absolutely gorgeous and if you can find a way to work this in with your train tour it will be well worth it. In my travels I don't often return to the same location more than once or twice but I've been to the Icefields Parkway six times.

Loved Banff as well as the icefields Parkway. Lake Louise and lake Moraine were all spectacular.

Good luck with your trip. After our experience with them my advice is give them a wide berth because if anything goes wrong they are hopeless at fixing it or responding to their customers appropriately money wise. Read my comment on trip advisor Rocky Horror Mountaineer
